Like I said, do your research: I may be entirely mistaken and these commands could kill off your drive.

was entirely mistaken. Issue any of those commands without first loading the reserve track properly into the buffer, and they will destroy your drive. The only way to recover from this mistake is a hardware reflash. While it is not overly difficult to reflash, its an extra annoyance. My apologies for the bad advice.
