I was entirely mistaken. Issue any of those commands without first loading the reserve track properly into the buffer, and they will destroy your drive. The only way to recover from this mistake is a hardware reflash. While it is not overly difficult to reflash, its an extra annoyance. My apologies for the bad advice.

BTW HDDs used to be called Winchester. Short russian version is "Vint". Coinsidently "vint" direct translation is "screw" thats why the confusion =)
