Sorry my mistake, treated same way as a WD. Hitachi unlocked. :D
That means, my motherboard and BIOS settings are good. So unclocking Lenovo WD drives needs a different approach.
Or are you the author in disguise? :D
Yes!

Exactly what do you mean? Shall I replace full mod 47 with zeroes in the ROM and flash it back? And after it try to read password module? Have you tried this method?

What about if i clear ROM mod 47h (adaptives), write SA (unlock password) and then regen adaptives using SA mod 103 ? Will it work too ?
That would solve the issue without using donnor drive and loader file, correct ?
Spildit wrote:Flash a ROM file from a donor drive with incorrect adaptives. Like, get a ROM file from another equal drive and flash that.

I agree. Interesting :)
But I don't have a donor. And it seems I do need one :(
I modified some lines to zero in the ROM's adaptives, but made no effect. Something else needs to be altered.
PapashaBeppe told something, but I don't understand:

He is saying that you need to remove the entry for MOD 47 from the MOD directory in either MOD 0B or MOD 20B. I can do this for you if you upload the ROM image.

I hope this is OK. I have removed the entry for MOD 30 from MOD 0B, and then shifted the remaining entries upwards to fill the vacancy, just in case. I then recalculated the checksum for MOD 0B.

Hopefully Spildit or louis could compare or verify the changes.

Your problem is that the zu software does not support 2.5" laptop drives. What a shame you were very close.... :<

HDD Unlock Wizard does not recognize my hard drive

Please make sure that your motherboard IDE/SATA controller is not running in AHCI/RAID mode.

Also, some chipsets (for example, SiS) and most PCI IDE/SATA/RAID controllers (for example, Promise, SiI/Silicon Image, HPT, Adaptec) do not support special non-standard protocol that HDD Unlock Wizard uses. We suggest that you only use standard IDE/SATA ports on your motherboard. The motherboard itself should not be based on a SiS chipset.

If these suggestions do not help, then please try HDD Unlock Wizard on a different platform.

me expert?

what i'm saying.
so you do not know what happened to his drive.

Are you an expert?
Tell me please what am I doing wrong? Lenovo WD 2.5" hdd with password.

Hi all,

I've been having a go at MHDD to give a dump to show me the hex code to retrieve the password.

The dump is attached (http://i.imgur.com/RAlXxBL.png), and as far as I can see the code should be 21 00 2F 00 14 00 22 00 08 00 08 00 0B 00 02.

Translating this to dec gives 022 051 079 099 098 023 046 053, which does not unlock the disc :(

Can someone help me out?

TIA.

Hello everybody,

first of all I like to thank you guys for sharing your knowledge with us. I started to read this thread from same reason as everybody else here, but it seems stuff is a bit more complicated, may be you will be able to give me a hint what to do with my hard drive.

I do have a WD3200BEVS-08VAT2 harddrive locked in Lenovo laptop, as it seems Lenovo puts a custom firmware to "their" hard drives, thus my attempts to unlock it failed.

I tried a mhdd, and Repair station with no luck. Mhdd wasn't working due custom firmware, the Repair station was reporting a disk failure (disk was reported OK, by the customer).

Is there any chance to bypass the Lenovo limitation to read the service info with the password ?
I need to image the hard drive, thus I have to be sure I will get the data undamaged. Security level is set to MAX, thus master password is out of the game.

I read something about the "safe mode" or "Hot swaping" the harddrive, the hot swaping doesn't sound very safe for me, but starting the hard drive in safe mode is interesting option. I would be grateful if some one could give some hints.

Thanks for your time guys

P.S.

Unfortunately giving a hdd to data recovery company is not an option.

Hi fzabkar (Franc),

We tried the password you send us, as we knew that was correct (it is my own hdd, and we've tried this password before). Entering it in the BIOS prompt at boot (when it says you need to enter the password to unlock the disk) did not work.

We then tried to enter it when it asked for the unlock key (when you are given the 8 key challenge), but it didnt work either. Then we tried to enter it in MHDD, but no success (as we tried before as well, we knew the password). We tried it in MHDD as both the master and user password, and we tried it in both keyboard scan code as normal characters.

Are there any other options left? What did you mean with the keyboard scan codes? Where should we use the keyboard scan translation of the password?

Thanks in advance!

Move the drive to a desktop computer and try ZU on it.

http://malthus.zapto.org/viewtopic.php?f=95&t=166

If you want to use a windows xp app, run WDR demo with the WD drive plugged to the system and select the correct port where the drive is plugged, then on hdd select ROYL, right click on the window and go to actions - clear password.

ZU didn't work either :( It's an Win7 64 bits HDD from a Acer 8530G laptop.

Hi there,

I've been reading this thread all day and finally got to unlock my friends hdd. Don't worry I'm not a thief, my friend locked his laptop hard drive by accident. Apparently his keyboard was the problem, long story. The point is he replaced it inmediatly by buying another hdd and send me the locked one to try to unlock it, by the way he is in Virginia cause of a Phd in economics.
The hdd is a WD5000BPVT-24HXZ and I used zu.exe third version (#zu.betta.050911.rar) I guess if you search by the name you will find it.
Before that I have tried everything else (mhdd, atapwd, marv_r) with no luck. So thanks to all. I post my experience hoping it helps someone else.
By the way my friend is really thankfull, he had his phd final paper in this hdd. He has recovered 4 months of work which he thought was lost.

Thanks

Hey everyone!
I already spent the whole afternoon and some further hours in reading this thread and managing to unlock my WD2500BEVS(-22USTO). I already knew that it was locked, when i bought it from ebay, thinking I could save some euros. Normally I'm not a total noob when it comes to to computer stuff, but this really cracked me up :D I just wanted a cheap hdd to build in my Xbox360 Fat -> can't flash the drive with it being locked
So, I followed some instructions in here and dumped my 22.bin, I also found the 01 07 Hex key, indicating the pw and the high security level. I also thought I figured out the password (keyboard-method), to be "matye". But at this point I don't know how to unlock the drive, since I don't know how the previous owner locked it and mhdd not accepting the phrase as user/master password. Could anyone give me a hint? Apparently I can't use ZU either, it's a 2.5" drive.
I really would appreciate some help :))

Here's my 22.bin dump, the pw section highlighted.:
