Also, I'm sorry if I took you the wrong way, but I doubt any of your posts were made in good will... You criticized me in every single post, and tried in your way to "stop" me from trying it myself, but I didn't see you applaud the fact I was able to read my destroyed chip, isn't this strange? I can understand that you are trying to protect your business, inventory, investment, knowledge, etc, but who told you I'd assign it to you anyway? (Actually, I admit that IF I was to give it to a pro, you'd be the first person to talk to, as you obviously have the knowledge). But, I'm not out for a professional help (in action), I just asked for recommendations/ideas, etc...

You pro guys have obviously forgotten that this is a forum. A forum is by its nature a place for people to seek free help. Otherwise it would be an online store of knowledge... But you have, like vultures in the desert fly in circles above corpse, made this your "home" in an effort to lure new customers, and treat everyone like they are either kids or straight amateurs...

There are people that come here who have the ability and will to fix a disk themselves, but need some guidance... If that's not even the minimum you are willing to offer, then why are you really here (if not to lure customers)?

@mayasoft: Mate, I don't know your initial intention for this place when you started it, but if the way it came out is not what you originally had in mind, but still permit it, I have to inform you that you've lost the whole point... If it was your original intention, then why don't you make it a private forum for pros only?

Well said. I'm on many other forums and this one is unique. I like the vulture analogy. I'm not saying the DR lot is all like that but quite a few of those who post in this thread chose to behave in a certain way. It's fairly pervasive in other threads as well - the few selected individuals.

PrinceOfAbyss, your attitude of "I deserve free help, and screw you if you don't give it to me" is 99% of the source of the nonhelpful posts in your thread. I applaud your perseverance and creativity in working on your case, but to me it is strange that you work so hard on some things and then can't be bothered to look up your part on digikey, etc. and whine and complain when nobody gives you a direct purchase link... Everyone here likes to see people succeed but acting like a spoiled child won't win you any friends anywhere

Sure, you said "Where can I get a new eeprom" and I said "digikey or ebay"... there are eeproms that will work on digikey for ~$1 and pcbs for your drive on ebay for ~$20.

I don't know why all of you DIY people think that anyone is afraid of losing business to you. There will always be large companies that need DR, and they aren't going to trust their valuable data to random DIY guys.

I never said that you are afraid of losing your job because companies will trust their precious data on DIYers... I said that you may be afraid of losing the DIYers themselves.

Besides, I doubt any DIYer would take up the risk to deal with a disk when big money is involved...

Personally, I wouldn't try this even to my brother's hard drive (if I had a brother)... The emotional stress when you go to unknown paths is exhaustive... But for me and my own disk, there was no other option. Either a DIY or goodbye to my data. So here we are...

For every one person who has the ability to DIY their problem there are 99 who have the desire but not the ability.

For every one person who has the desire to DIY their problem there are 9999 who don't have the time or patience.

So no, I'm not really concerned about losing any business. We do try to caution the 99 of 100 people who want to DIY but can't, so that they don't completely destroy any chances they do have. You screwed your case up pretty badly but have been able to work around that, which is great, but the other 99 of 100 people in your position would have to give up.

That makes you lose 1 customer (me) but attract 989901 more (99x9999)...

Who's fighting? This is a forum. Forums are for talking. We're talking.

We have to be hard on the people who want to try DIY because if they don't understand that they will most likely break their stuff forever then they may attempt DIY and fail when they should really give it to a pro.

And then if they DO attempt and fail, well, at least we warned them that it was probably going to happen and they made their attempt with that knowledge.

@Prince Please take time to read this carefully as I do not intend you any offence. I do feel that there was a reason for the question, although I wish you no ill will.

Are you really suggesting that breaking something by rushing and not taking proper care, then being lucky enough to not have done quite enough damage to permanently destroy it, is in some way worthy of respect? You have the required skills to have done this properly, surely that is more worthy of respect than the good fortune you have experienced? You may disagree.

And this moves us on to the whole idea of a forum; A forum, in my mind (I'm happy to be proven wrong), is a place where like minded individuals can meet, discuss, and if appropriate (and reasonable), help each other achieve a common goal. Suggesting that the medium is not working because people who have worked very hard (normally with 0 help from others) to learn their trade and hone their skills won't tell you exactly what you want to know is actually quite offensive. Not only to the people who have made a little bit of fun over this but directly to Maysoft who does a sterling job of maintaining this very forum.

I do hope that you get the desired result, as I do for each and every individual who is unfortunate enough to experience data loss. I also think that no individual has the right to free information, particularly without any real contribution to the community. I feel (and I'm a newbie too) that you are being a little too hard on some people on here.
