Is this component the TVS? (upper right, circled in red)



Drive is shorted, machine will not power up with this drive attached. Zero resistance across this component. The drive spins up OK with a different Seagate (PATA) board attached but the boards are not compatible.

Also, does a Coldheat "iron" work for removing surface mount devices? Anyone have experience with or advice on using a Coldheat on hard drive circuit boards or on motherboards?

A bigger picture would help. The circled part may be a TVS. Certainly the part above it is.

Cold Heat is a cute novelty. I actually appreciate it from an electronics point of view, and secretly hoped they worked well, but they don't. They're maybe good for someone who solders once a year, and has an audience to show off to. For surface mount? Do yourself a favor. Go to a flea market or ebay, and spend at least $5 for a real soldering iron for this job.

The part circled is not a TVS . TVS in these drives are below the power connector .
I also have working PCB for this drive if intrested PM me .

In hindsight, I may be wrong. I assumed this drive had a Molex connector as well as the SATA power connector. Either way, the circled part seems more square. With the surrounding parts, and without the board in front of me, I'd guess it's a coil, part of a power supply. That should show up as a short.

Thanks for the assistance and offers of replacement boards. I just got in some more drives, and one had the right circuit board, the drive is fixed. I have two other problem children now though that seem to have the same problem, I'll start a new thread for those.
