MAXTOR HDD not spinning up.

November 16th, 2008, 4:35

Hi all. I've got a Maxtor HDD that's maybe a Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 45 drive, but can't be sure, because the sticker's off. What I know is the drive's capacity - 20GB and the PCB reads NEBULA 301334101.
The problem:
Suddenly the drive stopped working and would not spin up at all.
Could this be solved by replacing the PCB?

I'm from Bulgaria, so sorry about my English...

Post a "clear" picture of the pcb.

Not common... Will be difficult to find a suitable pcb, I think.

I have a drive in my stock.

Write me a PM if you can send me just the PCB.

Any advice on matching PCBs? For example a 10GB Maxtor DiamondMax?

I have this PCB in stock PM me if required .

I've put a PCB from a 10GB Maxtor that fits in well but has a different main chip.
The drive is now spinning well, but heads produce regular clicks. At least I know the motor is OK.
Maybe a PCB replacement will fix it up well?!

If you can, check the 3.3V regulator!

In this family sometimes it gets bad.

Anyway, my little brother's girlfriend will come to me soon, from Bulgaria, so if you want, i can take a look to the PCB... :D

Hi, thanks for the tip!!! I was wondering if it can be the problem.
I guess you mean the component that's a SOT223?
Looks like this:

I've got the same spare part in stock. Will try to replace it.

Cheers!

I've replaced the voltage regulator but nothing changed!
The drive looks completely "dead", not spinning and chips stay cold...
Meanwhile, I found this:
http://www.ihdd.ru/forum/maxtor-32049h2-nebula-vt3413.html?highlight=nebula - the guy solved the same problem by replacing the main chip...

At this point, could be anything....
The Eprom, the VCD, some parts in the main power line....

Need to measure one pro, to determine the problem.

Also could be the motor controller check that as well .

Hi,

did u put a PCB on the drive from a different family?
If it was from a different family, don't expect anything more than clicking... these experiments are dangerous. If U need the data and don't have PCB for it, there are some DR firms nearby for sure. Or ask BGMan, he is from Bulgaria too.

could U post a picture of that board?

The PCB from the 10GB drive was definitely from a different family. Just wanted to check if the motor and the wires from it are all OK. Seems they are...
There is a picture of the board in one of the above posts.

Look for a donor PCB with C4DLA marked on it. If still clicks then do a rom swap.

or tests the components of the original pcb using multimeter.

A ROM swap? If clicks after replacing compatible PCB likely heads are damaged

He used a PCB from a different family, so it is not very surprising it clicked :)

Anyway, this thread can be terminated this way:
if U want to get quick access to your data, you have to pay the services of a pro, I suppose each one of us working in this field should lay such drive somewhere in our drawers, so it will not be a problem...

If U want inexpensive solution, try to dig up this board on the web, there's nothing more we can do here to support U I think, sorry.
