maxtor 40gb. Broken sectors since LBA 0 to 20000000

November 25th, 2008, 14:42

Hello, i have a maxtor that is damaged since LBA 0 to LBA 20000000 (in this space a lot of sectors are damaged) but the rest of the disk it's ok. The damaged space it's arround 10 gigas.

I can cut the bad part, to use the rest of the disk? I habe been scanning with MHDD with erase delays...that don't solve anything.

I have maked all this sectors (from LBA 0 to 20000000) as bad sectos with advanced (slow) disk bader, (command makebad, included in MHDD), thinking that scandisk will mark all this sectors as bad, and then, I will can use the rest of the HD...but windows do not recognice the HD.

Any help? Another best way to do what i'm looking for??

Thanks a lot!

PD: LBA==sector??

You can't cut the drive in a beginning.
There is no way to avoid so many bad sectors.

Or better : it is possible to cut a zone. PC3000 or Salvaation HD Doctor for Maxtor required and some editing of modules.
Of corse assuming that there is no bad scratch on the surface.
SS could help too, cutting the drive capacity.
But in your case I think the drive is really bad (weak / dying head) so it's not worth. The symptoms are typical.

Have you tried erasing that area with "erase" command?

yes. But after using mhdd I used HDD regenerator...and this program says, that all my bad sectors have been repaired...and after this, mhdd still showing a lot of bad sectors...

Hdd regenerator doesn't work, not only... Often it kills drives. Listen: a used drive is in the 10/20$ range... If you can't afford this, give up. If you want to TRY repairing your drive, you should buy at least SD hdd doctor or ACE equipment and, assuming you know what to do, probably your drive is beyond repair. Face the reality, please.

-_- i got 4 maxtor drive, 2 of it didn't show up any problem, and 2 of it shows problem...(diamondmax 8 "N40P" and 541dx "Athena")
as craig6928 said; maxtor = bad; seagate = maxtor : seagate is bad..?
conclusion = don't buy seagate?

Personally I like Seagate, not for performance but for recovery we have pretty good success with them.

Hate them seagates with single heads though :twisted:
