Hitachi HDT725050VLA360 failed - Not spinning

November 30th, 2008, 23:07

Hi all.

I am kinda stuck

I have the above drive from a Lacie external box, (2 x 500)
The one drive has failed and no longer spins up...
it makes the 3 beep

one beep then higher beep then higher beep again
sort of escallating.

I have tried swapping the bottom pcb...to find it is not that at fault.
i placed this pcb on the known good disk.. and it still works.

the issue i have is that the drive has data on it.. in Lacie's own messed up format..that spans both disks.

I have lifted the lid.. and found the drive platter is siezed solid.
It does not budge at all.

I have been reading this forum.. and now require your help ...

What is my next step?

*) do i need to move the platter to a donor disk?
*) Is it the arm? is it aunt betties birthday and thats why it
decided to crap itself?
*) can someone offer their services to swap the platter to a
donor drive?

i can try to source the same disk... my other lacie will have the same disks..and is backed up...so i can donate a disk from it..and
replace it at a later time with 2 new ones.

I will no doubt buy 2 new ones again for this too.but just want to re-enable this to spin up..and lacie to recognise..and for me to pull data off quicker than you can flick sh1t into a fan

I have seen kits available to do this swap also.. and that would also be an option...

but before i started ploughing ahead.. i wanted to know if anyone could confirm my thoughts..and a way ahead.

Any help/advice offered i thank you for in advance.

Motto = Backup your backups! Lesson learned! Hopefully not after the disaster.

Your next step, if you want your data back, is to contact a reputable data recovery company. I'm sure that there are at least 3 if not 4 platters in this drive, and 6-8 heads. It is not a first-time project for data recovery!

take a backup image of the functional one now, and then you already have a spare.

not that I would suggest doing it yourself, but it would help someone else who was trying if they didn't have to try to track down a matching drive.

As for reputable company.. can you name a decent one.. who won't try to stitch my hat on.?

And the second disk.. i can trash .. as the data is on both disks.. Lacie 2x500 = 1tb

I can trash a seperate lacie disk that is fully backed up.. and then i would have 2 spare disks.

What i ideally need.. is someone in bham... or nearby,, that has got the kit for disk platter swap. cos i guess it's pretty sure the drive spindle/motor is kaput!
agreed?
