Has anyone mapped the contents of rom from a WD drive?
I have a wd5000ks that the rom appears to be bad.
I have swapped the pcb with a known good drive but of course that didn't work.
It appears that at the very least, the head map is bad, and uncertain
if other corruption is there.

HD Doctor doesn't read the complete rom and it appears from files
in HDDguru that PC3000 also doesn't read complete rom from this
series.
To make things worse, WD Doctor won't write rom, so trying to
change head map doesn't work either.

So it appears as my only option is to read complete rom, then edit
in winhex, and rewrite the rom. This would be simple enough if
I knew which bits and bytes to modify.

Any help greatly appreciated

Steve

Are you using the latest version?

If the PCB has a discrete EEPROM you can always desolder and use the programmer.

Last 1024 bytes are adaptive data (for Marvell chipset). Re-write this block to similar ROM file.

Yes I know I will have to unsolder and then use the programmer.
But before I do that. I have to have the correct information
to apply to the Rom. The programmer only reads and writes.
It doesn't modify the code on a byte level. What I am seeking to do
is (hopefully) correct the head map, then write it back to the rom.
I can't achieve this if I don't know where the head map is stored,
or how it is formatted.

Do not reply to "networkpc3000". he's a big time spammer! He doesnt know SH#T except giving you a headache asking you to send this and that and eventually asking for your office address for spamming. Should be banned!
