I've got a HDT725025VLAT80 here that came out of an external drive... When powered on it spins up, makes normal seek noise, but does not ever come ready and then continues to make intermittent rhythmic seek noises. I have an identical drive here that I used to test the PCB... same problem.

I can switch to factory mode (SA-C) and access modules. Using salvation hd doctor I scanned and it gives me a checksum error for SVLG and DMP1 (though hitachi drives practically always give checksum error on DMP1, I think this is a quirk of the hd doctor) and a read error on HLR1 HLR2 and AMPM.

HD doctor allows the user to access SA-A, SA-B, and in factory mode, SA-C. It is normal for SA-C to only contain about the first half of the modules that are normally listed in SA-A and -B, I presume that SA-C only contains critical modules and the others are unneccessary, or this is another quirk of HD doctor.

On this particular drive, SA-B also only has about half of the modules listed, and does not seem to contain the modules that the scan said were problems.

To compound the problem, the HD doctor program does not interface with the drive correctly if I load it as a VLAT, but will interface with the drive if I load it as a VLA3, so it is possible that this is causing problems as well. I do not have a working HDT725025VLAT80 to generate a known good .RES file to avoid this issue.

Anyone have any thoughts? Is there a module that describes the map of the other modules so that I could potentially find where the extra copies of HLR1 HLR2 and AMPM live so that I could manually save them?

Thanks.

HDT725025VLAT80 is of VLA3 drive family.
If it was VLAT it should be HDS722525VLAT80 .

Interesting. I guess that would explain the behavior. So the question then is do these models really only have a single copy of nearly half of the modules? Or is the HD Doctor not loading the module map correctly?
