Dear gurus,

On Sept 30 2008, Steve Ballmer, CEO of Microsoft spoke at a news conference in Norway "We have a lot of business with the corporate sector as well as with the consumer sector and whatever happens economically will certainly effect itself on Microsoft," he told Reuters.

"I think one has to anticipate that no company is immune to these issues," he said,
Meantime, stock price of Apple dropped 40% during 6 weeks. On the other hand, according to the Forrester’s survey(a research company based in USA), nearly 43% company cut down the budget on IT to deal with the financial crisis, and more than 49% IT dept in financial industry has the same planning.

Furthermore, from the majority IT Company’s third quarter Financial Report, we can see the whole industry meet a large decline in sales; it marks that the winter for IT industry coming.

As one part of IT industry, Data Recovery Companies, how can we survive from the Crisis?

Is there any solution for IT Firms to survive from the financial crisis?

Recession = Customers not replacing PC's and continuing to use old equipment = Higher failure rate = Good for DR Business!

Also, don't forget all those lovely Seagate HDD's that Santa brought this year :)

Hopefully the "economic crisis" will weed out the amateurs from this business and those with a good reputation and skills will survive. Who said recession is bad?!

that's the most cheerful remarks in 2009. However, a lot ppl keep their money in pocket and wait. They won't spend too much, you see, they avoid some DR service and not willing to pay, which they might be paid before~

I heard one Economy Term "Lipstick Effect". Is there any connection? Maybe Data Recovery is like Lipstick and the sales will araise in the recession?

I am looking forward to more replies.

Regards

Laura

If a customer needs the data, they will pay to have it recovered, any serious customer cannot be without their data. Those who can afford to wait will probably not pay for a professional DR service anyway, it will help to weed out customers who waste time.

Provided you are a professional operation with good service and reasonable pricing, you will survive.

Those who are in DR for a "quick buck" will never last terribly long anyway. It's very easy to setup a DR company as long as you have a website that looks good, but the real test is if you can provide the service that you say you can. As long as the manufacturers keep selling poor quality drives, there will be work for those who spend the time and money investing in research and development.

The reasonable price is the point. Some of the established DR companies
will have to rethink their price policy - charging $/€ 2,000.- for a short
and easy work is neither justified nor ethical.

There are now three correctives for such prices:
1. cheaper and easier tools (like those from SD)
2. knowledge is spread (internet video like - "how to change hdd heads")
3. present economy

(The 4th would be ethical criteria, but I just learned from a "collegue", that
the new BMW is more important).

Listen : 80% and up of the problems on the drives are physical. So what? Common practitioners can give you a pill and the cost is low, a real skilled surgeon can fix something more complicated but the cost is MUCH HIGHER. Period. I'm not afraid of the crisis, it has beneficial effects on the "desperados" that enter a market spoiling it with low prices and few results. Periodical crisis do annihilate these morons, so there will be more space for real pros to grow up, it's only a matter of time. As I said some days ago, don't worry... the "bandidos" work of us. Sit and wait. Offer different services. Differentiate yourself from the mass and you'll be rewarded. But don't fall into temptation of cutting down prices. DR is a luxury, and luxury market does not and must not encounter crisis. It depends on what you want. This is my 2 cent.

Oh... i forgot... PERIOD.

We are emergency services. What do the clients always say other than "It was working ............."? That's right, they issue insults at themselves. It's not our fault that we have to reverse-engineer nanotech devices that are entirely undocumented.

Drives die everyday. Extremely low prices are unsustainable. :) Offering discounts does not make sense, ever. I'd rather adjust number of billable hours on the invoice.

As for me, I have several differentiating factors. :)

It is during recession when industry consolidation happens most cost-effectively.

I like your PERIOD stuff

PS: To survive the crisis you need to get more successful recoveries with less clients. I wouldn't buy non-professional products like SD - keep your money for better

Today I reacted to this "crisis" and the GM problems by purchasing a huge brand new fully loaded GM Suburban. LOL. We survived to 80's. We have many skills here at my companies, not just one...not only DR, but Programming, Mechanical, Chemical Engineering, Medical EHR/EMR,etc. We'll survive. We diversified in the 1980's and are much stronger today because of it.
PS: I save for the future, don't live on credit, and in fact, I am expanding my business to add a new location this week.
Cheers!

Today was basically the first real work day of the new year.
And guess what .. Hard drives with important data broke today
just like they do every other day.

It's gonna be a good year for DR :D

But since Laura started this thread, it should be noted that if
Salvation wants to have as good a year as DR firms, they should
listen to customers complaints and suggestions, and catch up with
current technology. :P

Still, it is best not to be complacent .. In the UK we have seen some BIG companies fail..

Woolworths - Nearly 100 year old company
Wedgwood - Over 200 year old company

I know of some DR companies that are already struggling - 'one's that are not 'in it for a quick buck'

So be careful everyone.. and good luck.

To HeadCrash and Doomer:

I don't know the relationship between you two. A couple or A pair? But it seems you are both Guys.

I started this thread, not listen to one frog yelling and another frog yelling the same.

You two are really professional actors and so suitable for the double-reed Show. Come on, you can get hotter and more passionate, we like show, especially it is free. :D

I know you are the fans of our so-called competitor, since I am the human you can see from SalvationDATA. so you have the opportunity to complain,I believe it will make you feel better. I was wondering if there is someone from ACE, will you shout too? Opps, you won't have such a chance in your lifetime, I guess. :)

You always complains, always tramp on SalvationDATA,always mock the newbie and always think you are the Real GURU on this forum. You see, it is not good for you to manner that way, it will make us think you wrongly. Is this guy a human or freaky Alien from Mars?

Whatever, I believe you are human being firmly, longing for good things from life, desire respect and admiration from others.

Okay, I think it is off topic.

To wiseleo ,

I really appreciate your "Drives die everyday. " It inspires all of us!

:D

Thank you for your replies, everyone!

Regards

Laura

Sorry Laura no hard feeling towards you personally. But.. dont you think your subject is better change from "How can We survive from the Financial Crisis?" to "How can SalvationData survive from the Financial Crisis? :D
Just kidding.....just got a little pissed off with your company lousy software design which do not conform with software engineering and standards. Tell that to your engineers and hopefully they will listen.

Hopefully the year 2009 you will have more positive feedbacks from us, only if you listen to customer's feedbacks, as BlackST loves to say "PERIOD". :D
