Seagate 500 gb platter pack moving around

January 28th, 2009, 0:01

Hello guys,
I have a 500gb seagate hd that fall just on the side and it started making a noise like something got loose and is moving inside.
It is not the click of the dead. I had another hd that had the clickingh noise, but this one does not have for sure the clicking noise. It has another problem.
The noise is from something that is moving inside.
If u peek up the hd and you move it around, you can fell and hear something moving inside.
When the HD was powered on, you could feel like it was trying to spin, but there was some mechanicl noise that was blocking it from spinning.

I opened the hd , and it seems that the platters spins but moves also all around. It is like they came out of some guide.
They do not cirle around, they move around and make metal noise while cirling and moving around

I think they are not in place anymore or maybe the motor is broken....

Is there any way to put them in place ?

Is there any way to remove the platters and mount them on an identical brand new hd ?

Could u pls tell me why to remove platters I need a platter remover tool ?

Is there any way to remove the platters without any tool and without damaging the hd ?

tx

By opening it and moving them around you potentially lost alignment forever... Either way at the least you will need to take it to a pro and be prepared to pay extra for opening it yourself.

Try DIY you will get a door stopper.

Surely lost alignment, opened drive = disk contaminated, heads in unknown state, motor damaged and need a swap. 2000$ and up plus taxes... Not for end users.

Tx fo the reply.

1) Why dust is a no no on the platters ?

2) my only solution is a swap (buy an identical hd and mount the old platters into it), how do I remove the dust that is on the old platters ? Is there any solution or dry textile that can be used?

3) can u suggest a pro service in USA (NY) for hd repair ?

Thank you

Almost certainly it's a 7200.10 with snapped spindle.

We have seen many times, and so far every one has been recovered.

Platters need to be removed with specialist tools and skills.

Sorry to say (for you) that you DO need to send this one to a pro with experience of this problem, if you require your data.
