Hi ,

I'm having a problem with 200gb Wd,
it's started with clicking noises and after 24h the computer didnt recognize it anymore,
I gave it yesterday to a proffesional recovery company and they said that the heads had damaged the platters so they can't recover it anymore,

Sorry for being sceptic, but I read that hard-drives had been recovery from worset damageds so how come that they can't recover mine?!?!

do you advice me to send it for another opinion?

is it possible that it's has been so damaged that you can't recover anything?!

Appreciate your quick reply
Yoav

You can always pay to get a second opinion.

There are a few WD specialists here who can tell you definitively if the drive is salvageable, so you've come to the right place.

Don't believe the claim that everything is always recoverable. That statistic is fudged up with easy cases that do not require opening a drive. Let's say I have 100 cases, 95 of them were easy and 5 required access to a clean room. Out of those 5, let's say 2 were unsuccessful. That's a 40% failure rate, but that would look terrible on a website, right? So I can claim a 98% success rate instead if the other easy stuff is factored in. That's why this number is meaningless.

I realize that you are in a state of grief, but don't blame your professional.

If there is obvious damage to the platter we usually send the customer a picture to end the conversation. Its the easiest way to show the customer what went wrong. Ask for a picture...

You can't always take a picture of scratches, especially if it is on the middle or bottom platter.
Try using services with free evaluation and free shipping back, so you won't have to pay for that.

Try:
www.gillware.com
www.micradatarecovery.com

That is what I know of, there are more companies, so do your research, though, make sure to look for free evaluation and make sure you can view your file before recovery.

Also, if someone tells you that you have platters damaged, it does not 100% mean that it is true. Perhaps they just couldn't recover the data. Also, depends how badly platters are damaged.

Taking pictures of the bottom platter is not a problem with the proper platter removal tools. Small scratches can be seen with alcohol applied to the area. Who offers free shipping with a free diagnosis?

Will I get my old hard drive back?

You can request to have your failed hard drive returned but a fee of $35 will be assessed. This fee covers any processing, reassembly, ground shipping, and handling. Failed hard drives are not returned in the same shipment as the data.

Compensation:
Customer agrees to pay Gillware all sums authorized from time to time by Customer, which will typically include charges for Gillware services, reasonable travel and per diem expenses for on site work, shipping and insurance (both ways), and actual expenses, if any, for part, media and/or off the shelf software used in the services. Unless otherwise agreed to in advance by Gillware, all such sums are due and payable in advance, by company check, bank money order, or credit card.

The only free thing is the toll free number.

Make sure you get a "file report" or something before you pay.

Q: Do I have to pay for shipping back to me?
A: Shipping the datato you is FREE. There is an additional charge of $25 for shipping may apply, only if you wish to have your old hard drive back. Also, a fee may apply for shipping if you have sent us a whole system (server, desktop or laptop).

Ok you got me here, its free shipping if you go through with the recovery and want a few DVDs mailed. But it still costs shipping money if you want a free evaluation and no recovery. They also charge for the drive returned. Don't get mad with me im only pointing out what is on there sites.

If you able to see files, that means data is already recovered.

If data unrecoverable, you won't be able to see it.

And if you say 'no' to their quote after you see the file report? Badly asked question. How much can the OP spend?
