Help recovering data from corrupteUSB Maxtor OneTouch Mini 4

February 25th, 2009, 11:31

When plugging in the USB Maxtor OneTouch 4 Mini into a Windows XP box the autoplay window comes up and it scans all of the files. Once that completes the drive shows up as the e:\ however when you try to access the drive it says the drive is not formatted would you like to format to continue. The drive has data on it which I need to recover. I also tried going to the command line and selecting the e:\ from the command prompt and when you try to change to that drive letter you get the error "Data error (cyclic redundancy check)." I downloaded the SeaTools and ran a short and long drive self test both of which passed, however all of the other tests said they were unavailable. Is there anything else I can try or any other software I can use to recover the data on this drive?

Thanks,
Andrew

Find a local shop that does data recovery. This type of error will be inexpensive to fix.

Could be a Windows problem, try it on another computer first (and another OS, Mac or Linux) if you have access, if you get everything off, reformat it, test it completely.

I'm going to try mounting it with knoppix and see if that works. Thanks for the suggestion.

A reboot initiated chkdsk and looks like it solved the problem. Thanks for the help / suggestions.

Chkdsk can cause problems. Don't trust it. Since it ran itself, you can't put the sh!t back in the donkey, but it's generally best not to do it voluntarily.

Yeah, when I saw it come up I held my breath, but luckily it didn't erase everything. Thanks again.
