[Help]Delayed Write Failed

February 22nd, 2009, 13:24

Hello guys, I am a new member here and want to need some help.

I have a problem with my seagate external hard disk. When I plug in the hard disk into the usb port, there is no problem. I can see the data and access the data properly. But after that, there is a warning message in the windows toolbar saying like this :

Windows - Delayed Write Failed

Windows was unable to save all the data for the file G:\$Mft.
The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure
of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere.

After that, I can not access the data anymore. When I tried to open the file, there is a warning message saying that the location of the file couldn't be found, or broken, or something like that.
Also, most of the files suddenly become lost, so only the empty folder left. But when I check in the properties of hard disk, it still shows the size of used file properly.

The warning message above shows for many times in the windows toolbar, and sometimes it shows a message like this :

Windows - Delayed Write Failed

Windows was unable to save all the data for the file G:\$Extend\$ObjId.
The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure
of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere.

So, what should I do to fix this problem. Is there any diagnosis software to detect what kind of problem happen to my external hard disk ? Or maybe is there other solution to fix this problem ?

I hope you guys could help me and I will appreciate it
Thanks before

It's developed bad sectors.

Copy your data off and RMA it.

RMA means to send it back if its still under guarantee and get a new one.

It stands for Return Materials Authorization.

Delayed writes failure in Windows is a common issue with certain external drives (1394/USB) and can also be caused by cabling, bad memory, incorrect registry settings and (windows) cache corruption. You could try it on a different computer, test memory (memtest86+), replace cable and as last resort max128k filter. For testing check S.M.A.R.T.
