just want to get your opinion on a suitable donor
the drive i have is a Hitachi travelstar HTS5480M9AT00 80Gb marked with Apple logo form a macbook.

i have a donor with same model but different MLC codes and part numbers, board numbers are identical

Can you see any issues with this or must i also match the mlc code and apple drive for this one.

I think you mean it is from an iBook. The MacBook series use SATA drives.

It's safest to match MLC but in my experience, simply the model, country of manufacture, and reasonable proximity in dates yield good results.

No need to match the Apple OEM brand.

thank you for the correction on the ibook.

I have 2 donors one is may 04, 1 is jun 04, the patient is Aug 04
will try the Jun 04 first, just testing the drive ot make sure all works well on it and will post results.

As a general question when drives are branded for apple, do they normally have any modifications done to them specifically for apple ?

Sometimes yes (e.g. Seagate Momentus). I can't speak for other manufacturers.

should you have those potential donors isn't it quicker to try than ask and wait for answers? (provided the surface is OK)
also U can check head geometry and compare before u replace them.
