WD PCBs without rom chip .... what is the solution???

Hello all ,

We all know that the recent models of WD Hdds come without Rom Chip on the PCB so when you replace the damaged PCB with a new one it makes the spindle motor run but when you connect the drive to the Computer it will not detected.

i hear that they merge the rom chip with the microcontroller .... is it right ?

how can i solve this problem???

You have to know how to read and write Microcode.

More than headmap is involved. Masked ROM in MCU contains adaptive data as well. This must be transferred to new PCB. Specialized equipment is required. Professional help needed if data is critical.

Or you can change the whole MCU to the new pcb .

... assuming the MCU is not fried.

To do the job are required :

BGA REWORK STATION (Infrared)
Flux (gel, liquid)
Reballing kit (stencil, flux, balls) to be used with IR rework station
As option : SMD solder cream.

IR means INFRARED.

Ah yes, of course... required to know how to do it.

P.S. before someone says something.. er.. uh... silly : this is the safest equipment to be used for such work. If you have seen youtube videos where hairdryer, oven, frying pans and eventually napalm are used for removing and resoldering a BGA chip, ASK the author of the video to help you. If you can.

Or you can rewrite the new pcb with pc3k UDMA . UDMA supports operations of rom with these drive these drives also have backup of rom on platters .

SD's HDD Dcotor for Western Digital has ability to rebuild rom using non native pcb. Havent tested it yet though.

The problem at present, without combo tools like SD / ACE is not read the rom... is write the rom (I mean the Marvell MCU...)

It does work, I tried it on a 1Tb ROYL drive. Needs to be same family drive, then it works a treat!

PC-3000 UDMA has a perfect function for ROYL's (Marvel without ext.rom) - ROM Recovery. You should find compatible PCB and just write inside it ROM from SA on the platters.
