Here's another reason to send it to a pro before attempting DIY.
I got a call today from a computer store today that "thought" they
would save the customer a little money.
Drive was formatted HFS+ and customer needed some files.
Store tech ran Rstudio . They were able to recover "some" files.
Then they proceeded to format to Ntfs, and put the recovered
files back on the original drive. Later customer decided that not
all the files he needed were there.
I haven't seen the drive yet, so I don't know if there is any hope,
But if I had of seen the drive First, I would have taken proper steps
to assure that data was preserved.

The point of this is this:
If you don't know what you are doing, don't do it.
If I am able to retrieve any data from this drive, it will cost much
more than it would have cost if the drive was sent to me in the first
place. Sending it to a pro FIRST will save money in the long run,
and allows for a greater chance of recovering needed data.
In this case, the DIY method most likely cost the customer his
needed data.

I had a drive come in last week that the customer had previously taken to Geek Squad, who ever-so-helpfully started by putting it in the break room freezer overnight.

Mysteriously Geek Squad wasn't able to recover any data!

Yeah I got one of those a while back .
Was a seagate with one of the metal covers
over the pcb.. As soon as I removed it, I knew it had
been in the freezer, as the whole pcb was corroded.

I just got one of those from a customer who went to "geek squad" and they got 95% of his data, but not most important finacial data file and drive is dead now. Got it back to life and hoping that his file would still be on a surface that is not damaged.

Why? Why? Why are they making few hundred dollar jobs into several thousand dollar jobs? If its even possible.....

I had one drive that computer shop recovered roughly 10-20% of the files, but when I got that drive, all of the heads were shreded into dust!!!! WHY? A..holes is a very polite name for such people.

Sometimes I wish this industry would be regulated like Accountants or Lawyers.

Geek Squad is the worst example I think... those people have absolutely no DR training whatsoever, it would be like asking your neighbor's angsty teenager to give you a root canal.

When a local repair shop screws up someone's data it makes me sad, but when Best Buy does it I want to recommend a lawsuit.

That's what people want. And deserve. Period.

It's not the always the customer or end users fault!

Usually the Geek squad or local shop is the first point of call for an end user when a difficulty appears on a system. Unfortunately the local pc shop or Geek squad is not qualified to evaluate hard drive problems. In most cases they get away with quickly carrying out a data transfer. But with the current state of play with very large drives containing enormous amounts of data and a probable reduction in quality/operating reliablity, complications soon appear. Often the customer is relying on the support or advice of the Geeks. Only later does the customer realise the technical level of these 'experts' is very low.

Then its a job for a pro.

Agree but the another point its there are some tendence and some "companies" wich we know "names" who its giving that tendence , to the "one button solutions" that "hacks" the mind of many people thinking on easy solutions ,the people think DR its one push button solution , like i want a "machine" where i put my Bad disk´s ( Head problems, Spindle, PCB, Bad Sectors, SA, Surface, Head Crash etc) Next, Next, Finish , and " voila" Data Recovery simle, Thats another problem, wich cause that too im think that IMHO
