Western Digital Caviar Green Power 500Gb 16Mb Cache Hard Drive SATAII 300MB/s <8.9ms 7200rpm - OEM
500GB Capacity, SATA-II Interface, IntelliPower Spin Speed, 8.9ms Average Seek Time, 16MB Cache, GreenPower Technology,

As hard drive capacities increase, the power required to run those drives increases as well. WD Caviar Green drives make it possible for energy-conscious customers to build systems with higher capacities and the right balance of system performance, ensured reliability, and energy conservation.

Reduced power consumption - WD has reduced power consumption by up to 40 percent compared to standard desktop drives with the combination of WD's IntelliSeek™, IntelliPark™, and IntelliPower™ technologies.
Helps enable eco-friendly PCs - WD Caviar Green drives yield an average drive power savings of 4-5 watts over standard desktop drives making it possible for our energy-conscious customers to build systems with higher capacities and the right balance of system performance, ensured reliability, and energy conservation. This power savings equates to reducing CO2 emission by up to 13.8 kilograms per drive per year - the equivalent of taking a car off the road for 3 days each year*. By using environmentally-conscious PCs with our WD Caviar Green drives on board, large organizations with many desktop computers can minimize their carbon footprint and save real money on electricity costs.

*Assumes that a car produces 1.60 CO2 pounds per Kwatt/hours/year. Calculation of automobile emissions depends on the car's g/km emission levels and km/year of driving.
Cool and Quiet - GreenPower™ technology yields lower operating temperatures for increased reliability and low acoustics for ultra-quiet PCs and external drives.
Perfect for external drives - External drive manufacturers can eliminate the need for a fan in a high-capacity product with a WD Caviar Green drive, the coolest and quietest in its class. External drives with WD Caviar Green drives on board can save up to $14.00 per year in electricity costs. See our power savings chart for details.
IntelliPower - A fine-tuned balance of spin speed, transfer rate and caching algorithms designed to deliver both significant power savings and solid performance. Additionally, WD Caviar Green drives consume less current during startup allowing lower peak loads on systems as they are booted.
IntelliSeek - Calculates optimum seek speeds to lower power consumption, noise and vibration. View demo >
IntelliPark - Delivers lower power consumption by automatically unloading the heads during idle to reduce aerodynamic drag.
Perpendicular Magnetic Recording (PMR) - Employs PMR technology to achieve even greater areal density.
StableTrac™ - The motor shaft is secured at both ends to reduce system-induced vibration and stabilize platters for accurate tracking, during read and write operations. (750 GB and 1 TB only)
Ideal For

PCs, external storage, and other devices that require lower power consumption and cool, quiet operation.

That is the drive family. Not sure who supports this

I'm not sure about family classification, but probably it's ROYAL Zeus

1) Zeus it is not a ROYAL family

2) 0ZUB0 it is Royal ( if PCB is 701474 - thats Hulk family)

The family can be determined in Marvel drives by the 3rd and 4th character in the second part of the model number, for example WD5000AAVS-00ZTBO would also be spider family

Funny thing, this morning I have a client to recover from this model, exactly the same !! :D

Problem is, drive still detected normally, complete with firmware and serial number, but no access to user data area. DE always replied with error at any sector (solution is : as usual -)

@crecomp, what is the problem with your client's drive ?

hi
thx for all answers

initial problem with drive is it came from another company.
Smooth chip was blown , customer game them a matching donor board he had, they replaced smooth chip drive will still not power up.

with another donor i have drive will power up, spin up, click softly but will not id.
i tired accessing SA to get copy of rom image from drive so that i can have correct rom on the board but cant access any of the modules on the drive.

it looks like this drive is still not supported by pc3000 but should be in the next update i have been told.

tried other families but cant access SA on the drive so i guess this can be either more damage with the drive or as it is the wrong family it wont let me read the modules i need.

i thought of moving the rom chip to the donor board, as it is a larger chip it will require precise work but i have a concern that as the smooth chip was damaged possibly other parets may be damamged including rom chip so deciding onj what to do

Is ROM not built in to the MCU in this one?

Yeah, the worst is when they tease you with an empty U12 spot on the PCB.

You're talking about moving the MCU?

AFAIK that should require a BGA rework station.

definitely does require a good rework station to do this job,
just wondering about success rates for these jobs, i know it really depends on the person and the tools and how well they can workk, but as rom is contained in the chip, i guess moving it should hopefully solve rom isses

Just make sure you don't mix them up :)
If I'm not mistaken there are two different Spider families (not compatible with each other) and at least three Hulks :)

Very common problem on WDs
That's a hard work - good luck
