Interesting problem with File System?

Hi folks,

I have a problem which I find interesting - it maybe trivial for some of you?

I copied some data, mainly pictures, from a computer to my PC.

I then formatted the hard disk I had copied from and loaded on a fresh copy of XP, and connected the hard disk back to my PC to copy the photos back.

When copying the photos back I get a little yellow dialog box down near the clock saying something like "Data Write Failed" - "Failed to write data on K:\" (K: is the target disk).

I have done a surface test on K: and it was fine.

I formatted K: with NTFS again but did not put a OS on it. This time the files copied without any errors at all.

What sort of fault with the hard disk might cause this? I am more than happy to buy a new disk (its only a small 80gb drive), abd I have the data backed up, but I am more than curious to what the issue might be?

Its a internal. Its got a big fat Acer sticker all over it, but MHDD tells me its really a Seagate ST340015A. (40Gb)

I was going to try MAKELOG and post that here but still struggling to get to grips with MHDD.

The write delay means that at some point Windows has no longer able to write data to this disk. This could be a high level problem (Windows, drivers, etc..) or it could be a low level or hardware problem.

1) Try using a different IDE cable, this one could be faulty.

2) what was the result from your MHDD scan? You can also post a screen shot of MHDD results if that's easier.

It could have been a logical bad sector on the drive and Windows was trying to write to it. You can perform a repair with MHDD on it. Look in the MHDD FAQ for instructions. Also for further analysis of Smart can provide some information as to the condition of the drive.

Well I am trying to post some information from MHDD but I am having a problem with getting it a drive to write the reports/screen shots to.

If I boot off the CD, there is no where to write the data to: I assume because its only got the CD and Target disk to write to.

If I put another hard disk (FAT32) on the secondary IDE controller (same one as the CD drive) I guess that would be an option, I tried this but it didnt seem to get assigned a drive letter in DOS before I started MHDD?

I even tried plugging in a USB thumb drive and starting MHDD with USB support but it reported USB drive not ready????

Perhaps you could advise further as I am struggling with MHDD at the moment.

Could I format a disk with DOS and format /s option then copy MHDD to the disk and boot off the disk, rather than using the boot CD?

Al,

1) You could boot from a floppy and save the logs
2) Yes, you could format a HD and install a DOS OS and run MHDD
3) You should also be able to boot from a USB drive( I never tried)

If you have not already done so, please read hdd-faq-t5.html and http://hddguru.com/content/en/software/ ... al.en.html for a better understanding of MHDD.

Also, allot of the drive manufacturers will provide a tool to analyze the problematic drive.
