Hey Guys,

I've got a Seagate Barracuda 7200.1 (ST3200822AS according to my BIOS) that I can't seem to access.

It used to be my primary Windows XP drive, but lately it stopped booting properly. It will boot to the "Windows Did Not Properly Shutdown" page and give me options. No matter which option I choose, it hangs for about 20 minutes before saying
"Windows cannot boot because file C:/windows/ntoskern.dll is missing."

In an attempt to recover the data, I installed another HD (a Maxtor with Windows XP Pro) as the master and set the Seagate as a slave. However, when Windows boots the second HD doesn't even show up. It also doesn't show up in Seatools or PC Doctor. MHDD can see it (kind of) but when I try to 'eid' I get a "Drive Not Ready" message. When I try to 'get passport' in Victoria 4.3, I get 'Get passport: time out! get passport: drive error!"

I'd really like to save the data on this drive... what are my options?

If it's seen in the BIOS properly, there's a chance you can image it with a DOS based imaging software (i.e. CopyR or Media Tools pro).

Do NOT let windows access it any more. Try to image it to a known good drive.

If this fails, then you need to send it to a pro, you'll have bad/weak head(s) and the more you hammer it the greater chance of it failing entirely.

How do I do that?

CopyR apparently doesn't support SATA, so that's out. I can buy a copy of Media Tools Pro is necessary, but of course I'd prefer a freeware solution.

When u run MHDD wich ATA registers did u got DRDY DSC?, or BSY?

If u family is 7200.11 this models has tendence to the LBA 0 , SA problem, that could be solved only by experienced hands

ST3200822AS is 7200.7 series, so doesn't normally suffer from LBA0 problem

My money's on bad sectors/head

Hy sean yes, indeed, i forgot to read the model , were some problem´s with my "eyes " a "failure page error " on my head while read the info je and read this Barracuda 7200.1 .only . so im think was 7200.11

free imaging solution. download a linux cd like knoppix.

Yes, you could use dd_rescue

Update: Spildit was right, I wasn't able to image it (Using Media Tools Pro or dd_rescue). I guess it's time to send it off to a pro.
