Hello !!!

I have an Hitachi 5K160 - HTS541616J9SA00, that does not work (by connecting to an external power with the power cord connected in reverse order).

AND NOW... if I connect the HD directly to the laptop:
- Not work
- Is it completely stopped
- Is not detected by BIOS

To solve this situation and recover all data, I bought a disc with the same model, just swapped the PCB and the result was the following:
- The HD work
- But is not detected by BIOS
- Not have access to my data because does not recognize HD.

If I buy another HD with a closest date to the original HD, the result is the same?

ANY SUGGESTIONS MORE?

the reason why it doesn't work that the drive has unique setting in NVRAM (chip 4). In order to get those setting you need to move content or chip itself 4b->4a. But here is another problem NVRAM revision supposed to match ROM revision which is located in chip 5 and if revision doesn't match - drive will not work. Because you drive doesn't have ROM chip (5b) the ROM itself located in chip 2b which is CPU
Here is the bottom line: if ROM content in 5a is not the same as in 2b (which I guess not) - you will not be able to recover your drive with PCB from the left even if you swap chip 4

PS: you may be surprised but sometimes DR is not a one-button-click
PPS: you may want to ask some pros for help. I know there are people from Portugal on this forum

Agree with doomer.
If you have a solution for backup the NVRAM before do anything, it is worth a try to swap the chips, but if not, maybe the good NVRAM will be corrupted by the not matching ROM....

I remember sometimes for some kinds model, if you want to change the PCB, you have to change the chip which was used to be called "BIOS".

So if you change the chip accordingly, I think it should be worked.

All good advice offered already, but before you go too much further, have you checked the fuse at position F1 (near power connector)? If fuse is bad, just short it with a small piece of solder.

About General Suggestions:
- Unfortunately I don't know anyone who has the PC-3000, so'm looking for a PCB compatible, but has not been easy.
- Can I distinguish a compatible PCB on the HDD outside? Is the MLC? or P/N? or maybe the S/N? or the date?
- The suggestion about the fuse at position F1 is also a good chance, because I tested it with the multimeter directly into each side of the fuse (direct in circuit) and on the 2 PCB boards.

THE RESULT:
- In the original HD (b) shows no value on multimeter
- In the other HD (a) yes, exist current in the fuse showed on multimeter

But, where can I buy only the "fuse N" to replace the position F1 (on original hd (b))?
If it not works, the other way, maybe... try a PCB more compatible.

Which the best data recovery tools?!
- DE-Atola
- PC-3000
- Or another?!

With this, is not necessary the original PCB? and my NVRAM (chip 4) is not necessary without backups?

If you want to find the PCB, I could help you to search in our stock, but today is holiday(May 1 st) in China, our engineer was out of office, we will go back to office tomorrow. ()

There are some people who sell PC 3000 in China, but I am not specialize in this part, so I suggest you to search in you own country. That would be helpful.

And if there is(I meaned if) not difficulty for you to come to China, we invite you to come to meet us, our engineer and our company.

But for safety, pls find a specialist in your country in Portugal, that will be helpful more than the other method if your data is very very improtant.

You've found the problem. You don't have to replace the fuse- you simply have to short the two contacts with either a piece of wire or solder. You can leave the bad fuse in place if you wish and just place the short around it. This will allow the drive to spin up and permit you to get your data off.

Assuming the fuse didn't go because of a short in something else, in which case turning it on with the fuse shorted would quickly lead to something important going up in smoke.

As we have been informed by our engineer and double checked, the PCB board which you need was out of stock. I am sorry.

And we have a important message for you, that the new PCB which you want to replace the old one was not correct(error).

You have to find a PCB which have a same No. of Chip 2a and 2b... and pls pay attention to the No. which was marked in the back of your PCB. There should have some No. in the white Place, pls double check again. And do not forget the chip which we called is "BIOS" in your original PCB (the old PCB), if you loss it, the HD may not work again.

This option about fuse, not works... turn computer off after 3 ~ 4 seconds.

The best way maybe the compatible PCB, but where can I buy a compatible PCB (or HD)?!
This moment I have 2 HDs working, but both are not compatible. Both have the chip 5a, but I want a PCB similar with PCB (b).

A curiosity: if I replace only the entire disk from the HD(b) to the HD(a), it works? (but this will be only the last case, if I can not find any compatible PCB).

NVRAM is always necessary? and with recovery solutions as PC-3000?! (for example).
Which are the best solutions? (assuming all the hypotheses.)

You can change PCB board with electric.In this way,NVRAM can be loaded.
If you use PC3000 UDMA,just check the SA.

The above message which I left for you was error, after I asked our engineer, and he said: changing the BIOS chip is a simple operation for some client who do not have a technical tools, and if you lose the BIOS chip, you could still use PC 3000, to re-program another chip, and pls note that data were in magnetic disk of hard disk (May be everyone of you have knew this message)

Sorry again for my ignorance, I will try to learn more knowledge in this special technology area and in this forum, and also think careful before posting.
