Ext. HDD shows 84GB being used, but where are these files?

May 23rd, 2009, 9:27

Hi all,
My external Seagate hard drive shows 931GB total storage, 847GB free, therefore by simple maths 84GB is used.
However, if I go into my computer, then E: drive, there's only one folder showing and it's only got about 5MB of data in it.
I'm trying to find this 84GB worth of data, and I don't know where to start looking!
I have "Show hidden files and folders" selected.
Can anyone help? Thanks in advance

How is the drive formatted ? Depending on how the drive is formatted, you can waste a lot of space. Also systemfiles can take a lot of space.

Try something like JDiskReport. Also if you had a bunch of stuff that was deleted it could have been archived into the System Volume Information for System Restore. You can turn off System Restore for that one disk and it should remove the files, if that is the issue.

Hi, thanks for all your replies. The problem was that the Windows XP option "Hide protected system files" was checked. I unchecked it, and viola... 84GB worth of files appeared!
