HI,

I have had this drive as my XP os and 2nd partition as data and for some strange reason it just went dead. Was not picked up in bios. Tried many connections and cables.

No spin, nothing. Put it in a USB ext and it didn't see it either. Just dead!!

I do not wish to lose my data and it died before I had a chance to arange backup. Only had it in a new box a week!

Any suggestions other than throw it away!

I think PCBA has broken, try to change!

With pcb, need to transfer the ROM content too, or it will not work.

I know there could be upteen things wrong, but on average would this be fixable?

I am still not sure what happened altho' it seems someone here was adding a drive and when adding the power cables could have plugged it in the wrong way to that drive. That's the only thing he can recall that he could have done. So who knows??

It is only 2 weeks old so naturally there is a warranty however I am not sure whether in Australia Seagate offer a 'data recovery' service or not.

There are some place here who offer a ' no data - no fee' service but not sure whether it applies to my problem.

I really appreciate your assistnace and gracious sharing of your knowledge.

If you want to RMA it don't play with the drive, otherwise it CAN BE recovered, as it is not dropped, just contact a reputable pro and choose between the offers.

Yes I agree, I will not mess with it as I do want it back working if I can.

Plus I know I can get a new blank drive from the place I bought it without any hassle.

I will see if I can find a pro here somewhere who is not too exy.

I see some ads where they do not charge if they cannot get it up and working with the original data, so we'll see.

Yes I understand the, 'you get what you pay for' concept, but what about the 'no data no pay'.

(and final post for me) : it's not the first time we see using the "no data no fee" as an excuse if something goes wrong or they DO wrong because of lack of method or equipment to justify some further damage : "well, but I didn't ask you nothing for my attempts..." - There are always exceptions, but beware. I have seen many drives completely messed up, because the owner asked 2 or 3 DR firms always on no data no fee basis (OBVIOUSLY, because serious DR firms DO charge much more if the drive has been already tampered...) without success (the problem was elsewhere), until had correct diagnose and repair.
As a note , I always charge for diagnose (with very few exceptions) and give report , it's not the end of the world. Some people like it, other dislike but this is not my problem.
Some words about low prices : we have discussed many times here : customers deserve EXACTLY what they whine or pay for. This has many implications , especially legal (one for all : AFTER agreement on price and the DR almost done the customer says "send me the drive back as is and I don't want to pay" ... what to do ? Both have legal binding, but if you take the case to court, who will be likely the winner? Unpredictable). I would suspect about very low prices as it is IMPOSSIBLE - because of tooling, equipment, taxes and so on - to have
such low prices.

There can always be exceptions.

It remembers me the story about a luxury car owner that wanted to change the complete tyres and wheels and was worried about the price... and then after a tour of all the garages he went to this obscure garage on the "wild side" ... oh yes, we can, 500$ for all ... and the guy started an endless asking and whining with the employee "but would be same quality of the original, but will you install them correctly, but will the car have the same performance, but..." until the boss came out and shouted "what the fuck do you want ? for 500$ everyone would know that these wheels are stolen !"

Yes on all accounts you are of course correct however it is still a gamble on the buyers side as he does not know who will do the best job, the cheapie guy or the high priced guy.

It is a gamble as any trader can say whatever they want to promote what they will do. Who knows whether it is correct.
