I think I've just blown two of my HDDs (both WD3200YS) by accidentally connecting power cables to both the SATA & legacy power inputs at the same time. They no longer spin up or make any noise when power is connected.

I have a third WD3200YS that was purchased at the same time & is still working, so would swapping the good PCB to the faulty ones have any chance of data recovery? I read this doesn't work on the newer HDDs - these were made in Jan 2007.

The HDD is under warranty, but I havn't looked into that yet. Does anybody know if I return it to WD under warranty, will they try and save the data and put it onto a new/repaired HDD, or will they just send a brand new HDD and not try and recover the data?

Had a look at the warranty policy, and no, they don't recover the data. I guess my options are to take it to a data recovery service, or try repair it myself by swapping the PCBs, or using the removing the TVS trick.

Removing a TVS is not a trick, and will solve your case only if that is the only problem. Keep in mind that a TVS is a safety feature, so running drives without one or both is inherently dangerous.

Swapping PCBs among your drives will not work without further manipulation of the ROM, and you run the risk of further damaging either the drives or the PCB depending on what has actually happened.
