Need some assistance locating this chip please?

The chip is of a Western Digital WD1600JD C The VM chip number is - L6282 3.2

If someone can point me in the right direction it would be very much be appreciated.

Thanks Janos, but i don't need to buy an entire drive just the chip or pcb and i'm not even sure if these drives contain this exact chip. i did a quick search and all i can come up with is whole HD's. any ideas?

Yes but listen CAREFULLY:

1) Even if I send you the replacement chip (only one ?!?) you need IR / Hot Air CONTROLLED TEMP REWORK STATION with PREHEAT for the PCB to remove and resolder the chip , that is soldered UNDER THE BODY on the PCB (it acts as heatsink).
Forget using common soldering iron or cheap tools as the PCBs are soldered with lead-free alloy (enough said , if you know something about PCB rework).

2) Assuming that you can remove and resolder the chip (that you most probably notice as burnt or melted or cracked or a mix) , you can have further damage to the preamp INSIDE the disk. But this is secondary.

3) If the combo chip is fried, surely you have something else fried too in the neighbourhood (the circuit is somewhat complex and some signal / voltages are derived)

Because of the 2) and 3) would be better to get a replacement PCB, make it compatible and then test. If drive doesn't work, you have fried preamp too or other problems.

1 & 2) pcb reworking is not an issue the controller has been removed already without any problems so replacing will not pose a challenge and as for a hotair station...

3) this vmc was butchered by someone else by some kind of external interaction.

according to the owner the drive was spinning up and then spinning down in a continuous cycle after a power surge but i'm finding it difficult to establish exactly what was done to the drive by the "butcher"

I do agree that replacing the pcb and firmware will probably be my best chance but i'm willing to attempt finding a replacement vmc first. thanks for your response and insight on this issue

Nobody (including the mfgs) will send you only one of this chip.
Maybe you can order it in 100.000 pcs LOTs.

It's 1000000% less work to just replace the whole PCB.

on assumption (and we all know what assuming did, that's usually the mother of all...) that may be the case that the preamp has gone but until i get my current issue resolved and do some sort of diagnostics only then will it become evident the real problem or problems. sourcing a donor pcb has become very difficult so i'm almost left with no choice but to repair. but then i'm open to suggestion.

1: you can find this VCD on many hdd pcb...
2: WD have a lot of compatible pcbs, but of course you need to transfer the ROM contents
3: you can measure the preamp with and WITHOUT the pcb

+ 4: if you van transfer the ROM, you can check this pcb on another HDA for sure it is bad or not
