Bought Hard Drive

OK now...what has happened is...years of being at uni involved in recording lots of content and simply putting on hard drive...this is really important stuff as I need to upload the content until one day hard drive stopped working after a ubuntu installation. I only looked at the underneath of the drive and circuit board and noticed the chip looked broken and cracked...I think I myt have dropped the drive...and when trying to power the pc with it in the power switches on and off. After trying to find teh exact drive I have given up...and want to take out the platters and swap them into a another drive.. the drive is : Maxtor diamondmax 21 250gb PATA only prob is I can only find SATA drives in teh diamondmax21 250gb's...does anyone know if this wud be a wise move as a last resort?...HELP please...a nooob :?:    :P :x

Hi,

Look at this, if your data is important.

DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT try swap the platters.

If you really need the data, I can help in UK.

If the solution is easy (such as PCB) then it'll be cheap, if it is seized (which it could be if you've dropped it) then it will be a little dearer but not hundreds and hundreds.

As people will vouch, I offer a generous hddguru discount. I'd rather do the job "on the cheap" than have someone try and fix their drive themselves beyond their capabilities and lose their data forever!

so you can't find exact donor drive to swap pcb so now you want to swap the platters? what was you going to use, a Samsung? What exactly are you studying at Uni? I encourage you to take a course in common sense.

Are these people for real or what?

Anyway, if you decide that the risk out weights the benefit you can purchase a PCB from here.

You need to read a lot more before you start doing anything risky
