WD3200JB pre-amp/head interchange?

August 13th, 2009, 9:24

Hello fellow members,

I need some information and I would appreciate it if anyone can help me out... PLEASE AND THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!

I have been signing into this site and reading posts everyday since I joined it in mid March, so that I can learn about hard drives. From what I have been reading on here and from some other online sources, it appears that if the 5th and 6th characters of the DCM are the same on the Donor drive and the original, then the pre-amp/heads are interchangable. (IS THAT TRUE?)

I have a WD3200JB and Pre-amp numbers on sticker is RNLQYAA76FO and on the black part where pins are located FCI19 0640 and I am wondering what I would need to look for in order to find a match to change the pre-amp/heads.

3200JB RNLQYAA76FO FCI19 0640 (MY ORIGINAL)
3200JB RDEEXAN15DO FC19 0633 (RECERTIFIED)
3200JS RNEQYKAPHLO FCIJ 0643 (SATA)
3200JD RDKEYR102JO FCI19 0638 (SATA) (I AM NOT SURE IF THE 1 IS A 1 OR AN I IN THIS ONE.... RDKEYR102JO)
3200JB DSCACAJCH (DONOR DRIVE) (IDE) (I did not look at the pre-amp sticker on this one as I am using it in one of my computers.)

On the SATA drives, the dates are very close to my original drive, but does the fact that they are SATA make them non compatible with IDE? The DCM 5th and 6th characters are the same.

The DCM's, dates and place of manufacturing are :

HHCACAJAAN (MY ORIGINAL) WD3200JB 00KFA0 NOVEMBER 22 2006 (IDE) THAILAND
DSCACAJCH (DONOR DRIVE) WD3200JB 00KFA0 OCTOBER 5 2005 (IDE) THAILAND
HHBHCA2CH (RECERTIFIED) WD3200JB 00KFA0. JAN 9 2009 (IDE) THAILAND
HHCHCA2AHN WD3200JS-60PDB0 01 DEC 2006 (SATA) THAILAND
HSBHCAJCA WD3200JD-60KLB0 05 JAN 2006 (SATA) THAILAND

I wonder if the heads/pre-amp are compatible from any of them to my original one?

One other question I have would be, what are the symptoms of the head alignment being wrong? What I mean is, what would the drive do if the heads are misaligned... Would it click, not power up or what would it do?

Thank you.

If you will damage heads while transferring them - drive will click
If you have head alignment issue - drive will click
If heads are not compatible with patient - drive will click

There is many more other reasons why drive might click or not work, besides Preamp problem.

Thank you for the reply... Is there a certain amount of clicks that determines what issue it would be? Whether it be head alignment, damaged heads, pre-amp or non compatibility.

Eli.

In some cases yes, but No in general.
