Hello gurus,

I've got a WD MyBook from a friend that`s fallen down to the floor. As it is fallen down, it was powered off.
I've put the drive itself on an SATA-Port on a computer. The drive spins up, without any clack clack. It seems that the mechanic is ok. The problem is that the BIOS finds a drive without a name and with a size of 0MB.

I have tried some tools, but no one has found the drive.
My suspicion ist that the controller is defect.

What options do I have?
Is it possible to change the hard drive controller with one from a simmilar drive? Or load a new firmware?

Please excuse my english, it`s a little bit rusted. But I hope you understand what I want from you. ;-)

The drive fell to the floor - this is impact, almost certainly physical damage.

The drive spins - almost certainly the pcb is OK

You think the mechanic is OK, almost certainly you are wrong - the drive fall down remember.

Now you think you want to change "controller" or you want to update firmware - bad idea

So you also tried some "tools" - this is a very bad idea.

Let me advise you - do not connect this drive to anything - this means no power to the drive.
Why?

Why! because your drive has like a broken ankle and you trying to make this drive run the marathon,
Soon the broken ankle will become a broken leg, then the broken leg will cause SHOCK and the heart
will stop beating and your patient will be dead forever.

Your patient must be transported to hospital.

If you want to play doctor doctor you should go to university for 5 or 6 years.

Please I hope you understand why I write this - cause I am concerned about your patient.

Thank you for your reply, but please don't missunderstand me. In the specs on the WD-Site is written that the Non-operating Shock is 350G. I think that this is enought that the harddrive, that is in a plastic cover, could survive a fall from 1 meter.

derp is correct.
it could be inexpensive recovery now, but you can make it very expensive, or unrecoverable by couple of wrong moves
