So the heads on our external hd has failed :( The computer recovery people have had it a month now & have not been able to find a match for it. Here's the info I need a match of:

WD5000KS - 00MNB0
07 Nov 06
DCM: HBACAJAAB
Product of Thailand

Have lots of sentimental pictures on it & lots of music too. :(

Hoping someone can help us!

If they can't manage to find a donor then I wouldn't hold my breath that they will be able to successfully complete this job. These drives are tough.

I've been thinking the same thing. Do you think it's worth calling other companies to see if they may have the match?

I'm getting the feeling we're screwed! :(

Which external hd would you choose. It seems they all have their issues but WD seems to be really difficult to find parts for.

I would expect that any reputable company should be able to take care of that themselves.

I don't really have a favorite for externals, you may be better off just getting an enclosure and a good internal drive and putting it together yourself. That drive in particular did have a lot of problems though.

Agreed, they are hideous drives.

Might be worth asking them if they know if ALL the heads have failed in the drive, it's quite often the case that just H7 that fails so they may be able to get a good chunk of data off the remaining heads.

hmm, good feedback, thanks a lot. I agree about the part of being reputable. They said they only have "3 sources" for finding these heads. That's what made me think I should be calling around to see if anyone else would carry them.

I'll ask about if ALL heads are broken though.

There is well more then three sources to find drives from, but I can say that I have had a lot of trouble locating these drives as well. I think a lot of the bigger companies bought up a lot of the donors that where circulating.

Granted, but for me it would have to be a pretty extreme case before I would even consider allowing a customer to bring their own donor drive.

I would not mind to take a drive from a customer, but won't ask them to look for a donor for us.

I took the initiative since they've had our drive for a month now & no luck. I feel they've given up before really trying too hard. I imagine they have 'easier' deals on the table.

Or it's just out of their league. A lot of folks don't like to admit being in that situation.

I think you're right. The guy told me today he would be fine if I wanted to give it to another company to try but that we could keep it there & they'd "keep looking" .... not holding my breath!

Some guy on here says he has the part but this was the response, does anyone understand this?:

"please let me know your minimum match way. as I do with others DR company. it match. but it not if you tell me you had to match all."

I don't get it.

What a mess! I'm just about ready to throw in the towel on any recovery!

He's asking you to tell him what numbers/codes/etc you want to match, which you're not in a position to provide. If I were you I wouldn't feel comfortable leaving the drive with anyone who isn't positive of what they're doing and either has the necessary inventory or has the ability to acquire it. Unfortunately that probably increases the cost of the service, but that's just how these things work.

Is the DR company charging you for their service?
