Every system/brand has proprietary filesystem , encoding, eventually encryption and data organisation . Can help, but don't ask any info.

It has proprietary fs and maybe hard encryption depending on brand/system. I can't tell you more.

I've done several CCTV jobs for Police and local authorities and everyone has been different so far.

Like BlackST says, most have had proprietry hardware encoding and filesystem (nothing like FAT,NTFS,UFS etc...)

First stop is to email the manufacturer, or in a lot of cases it's better to email your local distributor and get him to email the manufacturer, as a lot of manufacturers don't bother replying to end-user emails!

:buhaha: And you expect to have an answer ?

I had to discover everything by myself.

P.S. sometimes is necessary to have the box too and make some intervention.

Have the same fate, couldn't determine the fs used in my unit.
I have copied 100000 sectors , maybe you guys can help determine the fs.

The only jobs I've done like this are usually involved in some sort of litigation or law enforcement is needing the recovery as part of an investigation. Of the 10 or so I've done this year, I've just made whatever repairs are needed to the drive, (5 of them were fire damaged), and cloned them to a similar drive. From there the investigation team gets a compatible unit and installs the drive that I cloned. So far this has worked on each of these cases. While it is more than likely possible to drill down and regenerate the file system without carving the raw data, unless you are specialized in that area, it may be faster just to get a compatible unit and work from that.

Or you can do some research on different units / brands / models and ....

Got it working, its compressed/encrypted. You need the original viewer program to get it to work. In my case sector 0 - 100000 were messed up, so i placed a blank hdd onto the DVR and reinitialised the drive. Copy sector 0-100000 and paste to the cloned drive.
