can the data be retrieved and what would cause the grinding sound?

The grinding sound is either the bearings or your data being turned into dust.

If you need the data, then this one NEEDS to go to a pro. There is NOTHING you can do for this one I'm afraid to say.

i think its the bearings, cause when i pick up the drive (I removed the drive from the external FreeAgent case) it sounds like its wombling inside.
just a rough estimate if it was the bearings how much would it cost to fix?

Ah ha!
Broken spindle, 99% for sure.
Have done these before, any decent pro should be able to handle this.
