Hello.

I have recently run into a problem with my hard drive. I have a WD 160gb sata hard drive. I am running Windows Xp sp2.

This problem seems to came about when I unistalled an application from my computer. I had to restart the computer to finalize the uninstall. So the computer restarted, and when it turned back on in the boot up screen the hard drive spinned up, but then it started clicking. It makes about 4 clicks, and then the hard drive winds down. It starts back up makes about 4 more clicks winds down, then makes 2 clicks then winds down.

The hard drive will not boot up. In the boot up screen it is saying enter dvd/cd for boot up. Now the hard drive is being detected. I checked in bios, and the hard drive is being detected. It just won't boot up. I have another hard drive in right now that I just installed (segate 250 gb sata), because of the problem I am having with the WD hard drive. If I plug in the WD hard drive with the segate hard drive it won't boot up again, just get the clicking in the WD hard drive.

Now I have some important information on the hard drive. I am not going to spend $1000.00 to get the data off of it though. The problem just came about instantly. It didn't click while it was on or anything. It just did it when I uninstalled a program, restarted my computer, and then it started clicking.

Anybody know what is going on?

Four clicks and spin down, very likely that the heads have failed.

In which case, there's nothing you can do yourself.

No I havn't tried to scan it with MHDD. Is this what you are talking about http://hddguru.com/content/en/software/2005.10.02-MHDD/. If so do I download the CDROM iso-image? If i burn it to a dvd would it make a difference?

MHDD won't work on a non-identified disk. And YES, 4 click and spindown means bad head or FW problem. No DIY.

just2fly said the drive ID in BIOS... I wander if it ID as the factory Alias with XYZ... serial#? I think you got the click of death. It won't be a DIY job if you can't see it via MHDD. If your data is important, DO NOT OPEN the top cover on your own and don't take it to a local computer repair shop!!!!!! That may kill your data for good
