I am trying to recover data from a Seagate hard disk that has failed, and has not been backed up

I need some help identifying a reputable and reasonable data recovery service in the UK.

The hard drive has failed, here are the symtoms: -
1. Hard drive was reported as 'about to fail'
2. PC will not boot.
3. BIOS can see Hard drive.
4. New hard drive installed in PC (working ok) but the PC still will not boot when the failed drive is connected.
5. Mechanical noise is audible from the failed drive. Sounds like a marble bouncing on a hard surface.
6. A short time after power-up the hard drive powers down.

The drive is 360GB. I want to recover photo's from the drive. From reading other posts on the forum and the internet I am fairly sure that the heads need to be replaced. What is the going rate for this type of work?

You don't have to backup all of your files, just the ones you want to keep.

The "marble bouncing" noise is a sure sign there is at least one failed head in there, but the fact that it's seen in the BIOS shows that at least H0 is good, which is a good sign.

Thanks for the replies... I'm still considering all of the options.

I have found an identical drive that is for sale (BNIB). What are the pitfalls with a DIY repair, swapping the heads between the two drives? (I already know that a clean room is reccomended and I have access to a very clean laboratory environment where I work).

Since my orignal post I have found a lot of the lost data from old backups... therefore the drive doesn't really contain sufficient data to warrant a professional recovery.

Could anyone suplpy me with accurate dimensions for the head replacement tool... We have a 3D plotter at work so I could have one made!

We also would like to buy you a mercedes. Or a Rollce? Which one would you prefer?

Jokes apart, it is pretty good u found many of your important stuff backed up, I would be rather glad with it if I were U.
It is even better that you found it before ordering a DR job...

But asking for tool design info...
