Need your help, do you think this would work for my WD1600JB

October 11th, 2009, 19:01

Hi, I have been reading some past posts and I want to get your guys impression on this. Meaning would it work right out of the box. I hope it will.

PCB burned on my Western Digital WD1600JB-00REA0

DCM: DSBHCTJCA
PRODUCT OF MALAYSLA
S/N: WMANM2732109

DEAD PCB:
foxconn
chip: 88i6540-lfh1
Part Number?:2060-701292-001 REV A

Now will the part below ( ebay link ) work with this hard drive?

Item: http://cgi.ebay.com/WD-WD1600JB-00REA0-DCM-HBCHNTJAHN-HDD-PCB-Logic-Board_W0QQitemZ220471966160QQcmdZViewItemQQptZPCC_Drives_Storage_Internal?hash=item33552739d0

Thank you for your help! Question, please ask, I will do my best to answer them.

Hey, thanks for the reply!

I know from one post- Name: "Western Digital PCB Swap Rule" - Rameez stated: "For swapping pcbs, DCM don't care" He goes on to say: "DCM is matched when a donor for head is needed. If you hdd is clicking then check if pcb is compatible or not, u can also try changing ROM to or new PCB. "

I have a second wd1600 not jb. The PCB is different.. Different style and chip. Different setup 100%. I tried it... Probably dumb and it kicked the motor on. And then it clicked once and I unplugged it. This same post it states that clicking is a sign of pcb not being compatible. After: Rameez states again: "Did ur pcb burn out, if yes then preamp would be damaged as wel. Again I tell u no need to match DCM for matching PCB.

I keep seeing the term U12 come up. But rameez never states that. I'm kind of confused. I get one story from some one about switching and moving the u12? which I guess is the rom chip? and then another stating you just have to get the right model and chip, DCM doesn't matter.

Any one?

Kyle

Assuming the preamp is OK, then you need a PCB on the same P/N (i.e. 2060-01292-001) and move the 8-pin ROM at U12.

Simples. Assuming your soldering skills are up to the job :-)

I guess we will find out. But just to make sure, This is going to be a dumb questions. But this 8 pin. I'm assuming that it is 4 on each side, right?

Yes.

Yes. The chip should have 4 legs on each side and it's a small one. Please be very careful desoldering it. If you damaged that ROM, you can still recover your data at the recovery shop, but you have to pay up a lot of $$$.

thank you so much guys...

I bought the pcb.. Another dumb question. And I think I'm going to get a couple of no's from this one. But what ever. Should I try the PCB first without changing the rom?

Or should I just skip the testing and just change the rom? You guys have the experience so I trust your judgment...

you must replace the ROM first if this new PCB is for 80GB HD, if you try now it will make the drive clicking cause of head map

If you are buying the PCB that was removed from the dead drives, you should test the PCB to make sure it function but if you don't have a way to test it other than putting it on your damaged drive with your data on, it a hard one...

You don't want to test the PCB on the damaged drive and end up damaging any further.

We are seeing more and more customers asking us if we swap ROMs on PCBs that they purchased from China, HK, TW and other asian countries. So far, we provide the swap service in case-by-case but seeing a lot of donor PCBs (damaged) sent with the original PCBs. They were not getting any refund due to the purchase was from out side of the United States and it was sold as is.

If you can, test the PCB before you put it on your damaged drive. If there is no way for you to test it, then you can try putting it on the damaged drive to see if it will function. Based on the Ebay listing, the PCB you are buying came from a different model drive, so I'll be shocked if it works without swapping the ROM.

Good Luck!!! Let us know the result

Okay update time. The exchanging of rom chips / u12 failed. I do not know why. It seems the ROM chip it self is dead.

I asked around for prices and the cheapest one I could find just to get half the data back was 450 bucks... I mean come on people- they probably have the dam PCB and etc stuff needed just sitting around.

My brother came up with a very crazy idea and I would love your take on it. This drive is a 160GB. I have a second Western Digital fully working order. But I don't use it. My question is, could I just move the platters over to the other drive. Knowing that it wouldn't last long? Also note that this drive is a little different. Still being a Wd1600- its not a JB and has different DCM.

Thanks,
Kyle

Absolutely NO WAY attempt to move the platters, it will achieve nothing, please trust me on this one.

Frankly it's very unlikely your ROM was dead, with respect you've probably not performed the swap to a good enough standard or you've killed it. But it IS possible the ROM was/is dead now so instead of what would be a £150 job from us, is probably more like £300 now or more.

BUT having said that, if we can resurrect the data in your original ROM then a £150 recovery may still be possible. Please feel free to send your drive (with the ORIGINAL ROM).

Cheers

Can you be more specific on how your ROM switch failed?
Why do you think chip is dead?

Forget about moving platters....

Well I have a very high powered magnify glass.. And I connected the leads and made sure they were not touching each other or any other thing on the board. I thought I had the chip backwards for w/e reason. So I turned it. And no luck what so ever. For some reason- with my ROM CHIP- the motor in the drive would not spin. But when I reconnect thee wrong rom chip- the motor spins. But Bios doesn't see it.

Not to say- I tried many times to connect the rom chip and I couldn't get the drive to read or start.
Unsure what to do now. And the rom chip is not really destroyed. But in terms of me fixing it, its broken. And please don't post your service. If I had 250 USD or 150.. I would have went to them first.

It's time for you to give up. There is nothing you can do. You have probably overheating the rom chip. A pro will have hardware/software and the knowledge to recover the data from this situation .

You have 3 options. Either get on with your life and accept your data loss, throw the disk away, or put the disk in a safe place until you are willing to spend the required amount to recover the data.

I thought I would post because I have a similar problem if not identical here.
I have also got a WD1600 its a JD model.
It has board damage in the same area as indicated in the previous photo. On checking it appears Q1 is short circuit though this is not yet proven as there might still be a problem with the Smooth ic.

I swaped out the circuit board with a known working replacement and also swapped over the U12 ic.
Drive is still not spinning. All I get is a very slight thud from the internals then nothing. Might this be a siezed spindle or a faulty motor?

Resistance readings accross the motor windings are identical on both the working and non working drives.

Is there anything left to try before it would have to go to stage 3?

Put the donor pcb with donor rom on the patient hard drive. Does it spin? Put the donor pcb with patient rom on donor drive, does it spin? This should answer your question.
