Hi,
i got a drive from a friend that doesn't work anymore.
It was in an external enclosure and stood on the desk as he tripped over the cable and the drive fell to the ground. As he powered it, it was seen by windows for a short time, then disappeared. He tried to switch it off and on a second time, and it was just buzzing for aproximitly 10 seconds, then started clicking.

I don't know how accurate those information are (espacially if the drive was powered on or off as it fell). So before I try anything, I would like to ask you if it is even a good idea to power the drive again, because it sounds to me, as if there is a physical problem (like heads- or surface-problem). In that case I would be of no help, because I'm a DIY-guy and don't have professional equipment.

Drive is a WD6400AAVS-00G9B0, if more information is necessary I'll be glad to give them to you.

Best regards,
Zuujin

do not re power the drive. It is time to shop around for a good DR company. Stick to members of the forum and you won't go far wrong.

Hi! Sorry for answering so late. Thank you for your opinions! Can somebody estimate how much it would cost to recover? I'm waiting for my friend to tell me if there were important data or just movies on the drive, but would like to tell him how much it could cost him.

Best regards,
Zuujin

As far as I remember there are no pros here from Germany, so I cannot recommend any. But U may send the drive any of us nearby (Dobre, BlackST, PCImage, myself just to name a few).
The drive needs expert attention as it is probably having head and surface issues, not to mention that it is a WD...
