SMART. Ultra DMA CRC Error Count

April 9th, 2010, 4:13

Hi,

I have PC with two HDD SATA 2 (Maxtor and Seagate). Both of them are older then 2 years. Windows 7/64 located on Maxtor. Sometimes my system freeze and I decided to check both of HDD with HD Tune. And got next information.

The Ultra DMA CRC Error Count shows on Maxtor value 200-200-2 (Current-Worst-Threshold) and colored with yellow (warning), Seagate - with value 200-200-1. Checking the descriptions shows this: The number of errors in data transfer via the interface cable as determined by ICRC (Interface Cyclic Redundancy Check)..

I have replaced my SATA cable with three another but nothing changed (on Windows 7/64). And the same situation is on another PC (win XP) with different interface cables.

And visually my home system last time begin freezing too often. Even BSOD appeared with code F4 after complete freeze.

What is the problem?

Does my HDD going to die? Or maybe the problem is with controller or something? Should I buy the new one HDD for stable (without freeze) work??

Need expert advise. Thank you.

I don't see anything in the SMART attributes that is particularly worrying, as far as the attributes themselves are concerned. The freezing issue is commonly reported in Seagate's forums and appears to be the result of the drive having difficulty reading bad sectors. HD Tune's performance graphs may show large dips when this occurs. The access time graph will also show additional data points about 8ms above the main line of best fit. These correspond to read retries (8.33 ms is the rotation time for a 7200 RPM drive).

You could run SeaTools and hope that marginal sectors are remapped.

In any case, you will need a SeaTools error code before Seagate will issue an RMA.

HD Tune did not show any bad sectors. The test graph was completely green. About perfomance graph - see attached files

Apart from the lower than normal access time, I don't see anything out of the ordinary. But I'm no expert.

You could compare your results with other ST316081xAS drives:
