Hi,

I'm having a strange problem with Samsung HM500LI (which is inside Seagate Free Agent Go box) I often can't see data I copied on it when connected to another computer. Having checked SMART attributes I've found out that "Reallocation Sector Count" maxed out, unfortunately company won't take their HDD back for replacement, so I'd like to ask, maybe a stupid question, I think I have issue with bad blocks that happen on part where $MTF file are located, so maybe it's possible to relocate $MTF file to another part of disk and via terminal software make changes to SMART, so it would allow more sector to be reallocated. I understand, that it'd be wise to buy a new hdd, but i'd like to try and make this drive stabe and use for some useless downloads or temp files.

@orekhov,

Unfortunately resetting SMART attribute (knowing how to do it) won't help in this case as reallocation is already in act. You have to get data out of the drive and replace it. I have a certain feeling that imaging can be successful with some effort (i.e. retries).
Try to image first the good parts of the drive, do not make too many attempts on damaged sectors first. OR use different recovery strategies / SW.

If the drive is not totally worn out (i.e. too many micro defects, scratches or non fixable head problems) we can fix it 100%, but I am in Italy, it is not practical to send it back and forth...

Regards !

P.S.

If you get data out and want to try something, simply use MHDD and ERASE the entire drive. Turn off then on , and if you are lucky enough the problems are (temporarily) healed.
Will take a lot of time but it's worth a try. Sometimes Samsungs are smarter than we think ;)

Try forum.ru-board.com

They have good section about Samsung drives . Ask them for HTBI code and instructions how to use it. After a BI test your drive will be like brand new.
