Hi All,

I have a WD My World Book NAS 1 TB Unit. 1 disk was faulty (clicking) which i repaired and cloned with 0 Bad sectors (hooray!) but the external enclosure is damaged/faulty also.

So now i have 2 500 GB SATA hard disks that i have confirmed are in a JBOD/Spanned RAID config.

I have purchased a new working identical unit from Ebay but that could not recognise the drives (i noticed the serial # is actually in hex on the 2 hard disks near the end of each disk).

I am trying to recover the data - when i use 1 Recovery program and just span them together it shows the size of the data as about 12323 EB !! I'm expecing about 600 GB of data. This is a Linux Ext3 file system.

When i try to use another data recovery program that allows you to enter the 'reserved sectors at the end of the drive' i have used a few different numbers which i am fairly sure are correct but this program gives the error 'not resolved' or unable to open folder..or the folders are empty for some of the data.

As the disks are spanned, i can access the data on the 1st drive but when it comes to the data on the 2nd drive (spanned using the data recovery software) the settings must be wrong as those folders are either empty or cannot be opened (with an error message like 'run full scan or advanced scan' which i tried with no difference.

If anybody has every recovered data from one of these units, please send me a PM. I would be very greatful for your help and even will offer to pay you for our time to help with this one. I've been working on it for weeks and getting very frustrated!

Thanks,
Zed

Have you checked to see if there is some sort of header on the second drive? Since it is software JBOD perhaps the actual partition part of it does not start at the beginning of the disk? If your software is just attaching the whole second disk to the end of the first then you may be getting some junk info stuck in between.

This is a linux ext3 formatted volume. There are 3 small partitions.

Using UFS explorer, i have tried a hardware raid option and also a software raid option (only the data partition). I have performed a recovery on a similar (older one) before and it worked. This one seems a little different. If anybody has ever recovered data from this type of NAS unit before i would love to hear from you (PM please).

Thanks!
Zed
