I have one of these drives. Very simple fault, it just does not spin up. The drive details are :

DSBAYTJCA

I have taken the board off and it appears to be OK. No obvious fried components (I used a glass to look at everything).

Now the good news. I bought another near identical drive, removed the board from it and attached it to my "dead" drive. Note - I covered up the connections to the heads so just the motor contacts were connected. I was surprised to find that the drive did spin up, then seemed to stop, then spin up - I guess as the board was not getting any response from the heads it was cycling the motor power. The donor drive is as follows :

My question is, what do I try first ? Dare I just try my donor board on the drive and hope for the best ? Do I try to remove the TVS diodes ? I'm really not sure what the next step should be. Obviously something is bad on the original board. Any suggestions welcome as to what I should try first.

Try the board and see if it works. May have different firmwares. You have a very small chance that anything will go wrong.

If you are good at soldering. There is a small 8-pin chip on the board labeled U12, swap that from the good board to the bad board. That should fix it up for ya. Make sure you mark it to know which direction you need to put it on.

The firmwares are different between the two drives.

You have to transfer U12 chip from Original board to a replacement board to match " microcode" firmware of your drive. That should solve your problem.

The original board is 2060-701335-003 REV B
The donor board is 2060-701335-005 REV A

So, not quite the same but not that much different either. Both boards have the same chips - a Marvell chip 88i6545-TFJ1 and a Smooth chip L6283 1.3 - there are some other numbers on these chips which do not match but I guess these are batch codes or manufacturing dates.

The U12 chip is different. I guess its the same part just from different sources. The original is 25P10VP and the donor is 25VF010. The original board has a small white sticker on the black plastic moulding for the power and sata cable with V7251 printed on it. The donor has a similar label with V7281 on it.

I got the DCM code wrong for the donor drive in my original post. It should be DSBHYTJCH (the original drive is as before DSBAYTJCA).

Hi, There is still a possibility your drive also has a damaged preamp. I would be inclined to try the replacement board without the u12 changeover and with contact to heads/preamp. If the drive dosn't spin then you have further problems. After the test the replacement board can be restored to its original drive to make sure it is still working correctly.

Well, last night I took the ROM chip off my original board and fitted it to the new board.

Now the drive spins up and I can hear the heads moving but it never seems to get into a state where I can read anything from it.

Any suggestions on what diagnostics I should run or whether I can use some form of low level image software to get the data would be welcome. I have never done this before so I'm working in the dark on this.

does the drive click with the heads several times, or u only hear one click when unparking its heads?

The drive when powered up is trying to read something off the disk, like its searching for something but then gives up after about 30 seconds. The drive spins down, then up again. the same thing happens and it stops and doesnt retry.

I tried running MHDD but before MHDD has a chance to scan for drives the disk has powered down and it doesnt find it. I have managed to get Windows to see the disk by connecting it through a USB adapter but Windows disk management thinks it needs initialising.

I wonder if I might have been better of trying the board as it was. I may have made it worse by swapping the ROM over ???

Sounds like the preamp is damaged also, this requires pro intervention as it's inside the HDA itself.

agreed, probably preamp is also gone. U need to seek professional help, as a head replacement is not for laymen, not to mention that this is a WD...

Well, I went back to basics tonight and put the original ROM chip back on the donor board. I tried it on its original drive - no problems there. So I just fitted it onto my failed drive - the exact same problem. It spins up, sounds like its trying to find something then powers off. Tries again and then gives up. I should have tried the board swap first before even thinking about messing about with ROM chips.

Is this even more proof its internal ?

Pretty conclusive I'd say.

"Could" be a SA problem also, but more likely to be the preamp given the blown PCB.

Either way I think you've gone as far as you can with this case, you have done very well to get this far.

try to find a good 1335 - 003 and see what will happen, this is your last chance, if the drive start to click again then it's 100 % that the preamp is gone

Might not be pre amp. I did one yesterday with blown pcb, only one head had failed. That was a Samsung. You need to test heads one at a time before changing parts.

Dangerous....

If preamp is gone and it is driving some current on the writing heads, the data will be gone while all these tests are done.
the safest thing is to replace the MHA now, but as I mentioned it may have some difficulties...
