I have the following drive that is not recognized by bios:

I have swapped boards on older drives back in the day but this one I am unsure of. I pulled the pcb off and the chip (square, 64 pins?) near the contacts for spindle motor has a bulge in it. I believe this is the one that usually fries, I also see a bit of discoloration in grey foam material that it rests against when installed. My guess is the magic smoke just did not have enough ooomph to push all the way out.

That being said can I find another controller board from the same series and swap it? I have read that if i swap the 8 pin u12 chip to the new controller it will work, others have posted I would need to swap the larger ROM chip to get it to have a chance.

If I had to swap the larger chip, would it not make sense just to swap out the fried spindle controller instead ? Also does anyone just repair the pcb to get the drive up and running again. My plan is to get it running and clone it onto new media. Maybe that is just the noob in me talking.

If there is no internal damage (to preamp etc) then new PCB will work if you swap the 8-leg eeprom

I think my soldering skills are up to doing the 8 pin swap.So I am going to go for it.

Now the question is how do I go about matching up the old/new board ? Do I go by the number on the sticker by where the "jumper" pins are ? Or is there another number I should be more concerned with ?

u need a board with 1335.
I do not think they used more than one type of microcontroller on these, so U got a good chance of success by matching that number.
This board is used on other families like WDxxxxYS-xxSHxx, WDxxxxJS-xxNCxx, WDxxxxJS-xxNGxx, WDxxxxJD-xxMSxx, WDxxxxJD-xxLSxx, and probably some others as well.

It has taken me a while but I finally procured a controller board, it came with a drive. Unfortunately in my haste I did not first test the replacement card/drive combo. I pulled the 8 pin chip from the old drive and put in on new board, placed them in the original system and bios could not recognize it. I did NOT hear the drive spin up. I pulled the controller card off and placed it onto the "new" replacement drive, ( my thinking being maybe the motor had given up the ghost in the old drive) , even though I know it would not most likely be able to be read I should hear it spin up, right? Even the new drive will not spin up. Is it possible that in the process of soldering the chip on or removing the old one I poofed the new board?

My thinking is that the prom should have no effect on the controller card to spin up the drive. Maybe the card/drive I bought was doa. I am using just the power supply I bought that came with a hdd to usb adapter.

I guess I am going to locate a 3rd drive/controller donor and check it before hand to see if I was the cause of this. Any other ideas, or suggestions - I am just thinking out loud here.

if it is not spinning I would double check to make sure you soldered the ROM in the correct direction and that all pins are making good contact

beyond that maybe new PCB is bad.

So the ROM is necessary for the motor to spin up? Maybe I will try putting the ROM that came on the new drive back on the new card and see if it (replacement) spins. If by chance I get the new (replacement) drive to spin is it safe to try the card on the old(the one I need the data from) drive ? I know it should not be able to read it, but that would tell me if the controller and spindle motor are good.

The down side is if it does work then either I popped the ROM (very, very bad) or I did not have it connected properly and it might still be o.k. ( best of the potential situations).

Does this sound like a logical way to proceed ? Or, should I just go ahead and order the 3rd drive for parts...

I'd say unlikely you killed the ROM unless you did a very bad job of soldering

The drive will not spin if it is unable to read/load the ROM for whatever reason.

It is possible that if the preamp (inside the drive) is shorted that it can kill your PCB.

I will try to swap the new ROM back to the new board and spin up old, then new drives. I am not sure about the preamp being the problem as neither drive spins up now. Can I mask off the preamp connections to eliminate that as a potential issue ?

Looks like I lifted 2 of the pads from where the ROM sits, I am ordering a new pcb today. In the meantime I am going to jumper from the traces that went to the pads to the legs on the ROM.

Thank you so much for ALL the help here. I got it to spin up. < BIG SIGH of relief >

Tomorrow I will hook it up and see what can be read.

Should I clone it to a known good drive to do data retrieval, or just go ahead and copy off what I can find ? I do not have a real fast cloning package, so I am worried that running it for that long might cause whatever problem there was that burned up the old controller chip to do the same to the new one.

I have also read that cooling the drive before hand can help the process, anyone care to weigh in on that as well ?

I suppose u can hook it up under windows and copy the important stuff off.
Cooling is good, but forget freezer stuff please...
use a fan instead.
