Data recovery and disk repair questions and discussions related to old-fashioned SATA, SAS, SCSI, IDE, MFM hard drives - any type of storage device that has moving parts

hi, i have some wd6400aaks with problems, some are recognized by bios only at 2nd or 3rd reboot and some others are not recognized at all; there's a way to determine what is the problem of each drive without using expensive tools like pc-3000? (maybe using some ata commands...) If it's only a firmware problem maybe it is possible to backup or rewrite the rom?
if a disk is recognized by bios only at 2nd or at 3rd reboot what could be the cause? firmware? heads? other? however even if recognized by the bios te disks are damaged with many bad sectors and hdtune couldn't even terminate the scan
the drives not recognized by the bios sounds like thet are trying to load but after 20-30 seconds the drive don't sound anymore; (maybe i could try to record the sounds...)
thank you for any help
(ps sorry for my bad english...)

Could be anything. If you're not trying to get data better to RMA them or throw them away if out of warranty. If you are trying to get data there is nothing you can do for these drives without pro tools.

ill vote for weak heads. maybe some sa damage. Rewriting the rom wont help u m8. Especialy since what can be called FW is mostly on the platters , and ROM serves mostly as a direction sign to it =)

how can i see if it's rom firmware or platter firmware damaged or both?
the firmware on the platters is called service area? sorry i'm a noob...

if u have important data on the drive, stop right here and find somebody armed heavily for this recovery.
without knowledge and tools u will screw it up more (the drive will screw itself within a short period of time anyway, but u can help it to be quicker

)

i don't care about the data, only trying to see if it's possible to make some disks work properly. if it's only a software/firmware problem maybe is possible to do something? however if it's an hardware problem i will not try to open the drives
you think that is possible to see if the firmware it's damaged or to correct it?
maybe a corruption of the firmware could have made some disks unusable?
(sorry for my bad english...)

There is nothing an enduser can do for this model of disk.
