Has anyone who had a bad HD, that was out of warranty. Then go to a store, buy a new HD that has the same lid and screw holes (but can be a different size or the same), then swap the lid by unscrewing the torx screws, then send it back for RMA (using the NEW LID with the OLD BAD drive)

I don't think the company checks the 'insides' and attempt to "repair" it. they would just totally 'replace it' right? so they would not know? Has anyone tried it?

Lex luthor, your evil genius idea for stealing hard drives from legit companies has been prevented since 1982 with a simple idea of putting the label sticker over the screws. You must cut the label to remove screws, doing so voids the warranty for RMA.

If you can shrink yourself to be 10 angstroms wide, you can slip between the electrons and protons in the atoms of the sticker and remove the screw. Or you can travel back in time to 1981 and swap some 10mb drives. The choice is yours!

......and were you planning on using the "new" drive from which you have taken the lid? I'd love to see how long that drive would last.

I think this deserves an award for the stupidest idea we have seen on this forum

Out of warranty = more than 3 years old, with a value less than $30. That's a huge crime!! :D
let's put together those bucks for that guy :)
