Hi guys. i've recently bought a WD 500GB hard drive. IT works fast and cool (relatively, betweeen 35 to 41). But it makes an annoying sound while reading\writing data.

http://www.easy-share.com/1909109017/Hd ... 0noise.WMA 3.3 MB High quality

http://www.easy-share.com/1909109047/Hd ... ise56k.wma (For 56k users) 0.9 MB

Please listen to the recorded file and let me know if it's a broken drive. Please note that there is no distance between the hole on the top of the HDD and microphone, that's why it's so clear and a bit loud.

Some folks say it's pretty normal. That's usually what you hear when there is a read/write process. One guy said the heads are touching the disc, tough it wont damage the disk itself and the psu won't cause this; it lies solely in [b]the construction of the drive.[b]

Sounds abnormally scratchy - take it back. No hdd these days should be annoying to live with.

pixels, i did that, they said that's pretty normal, it's just reading/writing data.

Did they lie to me?

BTW, They are not an official WD branch. The dirve is made in thailand, not america. :?

IMHO this sounds not OK at all. A current hard drive should not emmit such a combination of scratching/clicking noises. That can't be healthy in the long run.

Seeking noises that most drives produce are OK, but this constant high frequent sound, even right after powering it on sure doesn't sound like it is normal.

I wouldn't go so far as to say they lied to you.
In the past I have found wd to have an annoyingly clicky head seek, but I'm sure their current drives are much improved in this regard.
But yours seems not only somewhat clicky, but to have an added intermittent high pitched squealy sound behind that. I certainly wouldn't put up with it or trust it.

You may find that many wd's are made in thailand, the ones I have are.

Ok, so the conclusion is that this is not a normal noise, and it needs to be fixed. Thank you for this information. But how? How can i fix this? What is causing this sound? Can anyone guess? Maybe i should ask an expert to do this. Because.....
