Hi;

I am attempting data recovery from a toshiba MK8025GAS. when first given the project the hard drive did not spin up. so i bought a identical PCB. The new PCB spun up the drive but would give a S.M.A.R.T error in BIOS and would not show up in any of my cloning tools. It also made clicking noises and the ocational beep. Now it does not even show in BIOS. After reading some articles in this forum I descoverd that the IC 12 needed to be swapped over from the old PCB. I also read about a SMC fuse. Well it turns out all that was wrong with the original PCB was the fuse. So after repairing the fuse the original PCB also spins up the Hard drive however it as well clicks and beeps (have not tried to see if it registers in BIOS). I realize my best bet is to send it to a pro but I want to take this opurtuninty to learn about HDD's, I enjoy tinkering.

My question(s):
Should my next step be to try and replace the heads? Or should i just swap platters and PCB to a working MK8025GAS? And if so does IC 12 contain any data relivant to the head or are the heads compleatly interchangable? Is there anything else that will cause the drive not to register in BIOS?

I am new to this game but have years of experience in electroincs in an industreal enviroment so I have some knolidge and skill of circut level electronics.

Thanks for any help

Hi do not do that if you want your data.

If you do not want your data , go on them report here, what happen ;)

I have to tell you that you need some tools and knowledge to do that, and the most important a clean room.

Regards

LOL, If I deside to go this route and it explodes when I fire it up I will post here for a warning to all DYI's. Im just not sure weather to try just the Heads in the old drive or swap the platters and PCB in the new drive.
