Samsung HM160HC 2.5" PATA - Spin-up error

March 4th, 2010, 10:17

Hello everyone,

Got this problem with my notebook HDD.
It is not detected by BIOS, when started - it makes 3 short ticks, then pause, then again 3 short ticks, pause - this repeats several times, then it go to silent. If I shake it after that, it agains, starts to tick (the same way) several times, then go silent.

I connected it to PC by serial terminal and got this data:
"IS=+00005" message for every 3 short ticks that I hear.
After several messages, it writes "LED 16" message in cycle.
I found that 16 code for Samsung means "Spin-up error".

Then I removed PCB and turned it on separately (without drive), it gave me "IS=+00003" message several time, then again "LED 16" in cycle.

I would be grateful if someone can help me how to proceed further. I have electronic skills and have solder and test equipment. My purpose is to recover data.

Thanks in advance!

Hi,
You can start from PCB exchange...
If PCB exchange not help - may be spindle seizure or heads sticking to the platters.
Not a DIY...

Motor and VCM driven OK ? If yes, check for mechanical problem.

I mean, which pins to check and voltage should I see there?

Hi,
At the beginning - a simple replacement of PCB is sufficient
-if with the new PCB we receive error 16 in the terminal - damage is beyond the PCB...
-if with the new PCB the error changes number to 5B - this means that the patient PCB is damaged...
