Hello,

I have a sound here that I am having a hard time locating a description for, or a similar sound. I have looked a lot here on this site, as well as others and also youtube.
The recording is hosted here (I do not have a website at the moment):

http://www.supload.com/sound_confirm.ph ... 030046.wav

I suppose if i had to describe it, it would be a whirring/chirping noise. No scraping and is very quiet, it does this a few times, and then the HDD spins down. I am trying to guesstimate a cause of the problem, this drive was a replacement from WD and was approx 1 month old. I powered the system down, and upon powering back up, the drive no longer functioned.

Thank you for your time, I appreciate it greatly!
Tom

It almost sounds like the heads are touching the platters as they spin. It will all depend on where the noise is comming from. Do you here it from inside or outside the box?

If you need data, send it in to the data center, other wise, RMA it to WD since this was a replacement of another drive!!! The warranty should be still good with them!!!

DOes drive remain spinning after this noise????

HDDmania,

Thank you for your reply. I really appreciate it, and I am sorry for my late response as well. My case is "loud" I can only hear the noise if I remove the drive from the case. By "loud", means, I have a few fans running :) I wanted the data, so I did not send it to WD, and I also could not afford having it sent to data recovery pro's. So I opted for a learning experience, which I will write about and post here shortly. The drive did and still does remain spinning after the noise. After disassembling the drive, my thoughts are that the noise could have been caused be a slight warp in the second platter. I do not have enough experience to make that statement with any certainty tho.

Best regards,
Tom

How far did you disassemble the drive?

Just removing the PCB and the top cover?
or
Removing the head stack (arm) and unscrewed the platters?
