Drive motor sounds like a jet engine and sounds like it may be varying in rpm but drive comes ready a bit slow and is identified with correct model, s/n and capacity but no access to any data sectors. All modules check good but it takes a long time to read them and they don't all read all of the time. Put platter in a drive with a good motor. Now it takes a while before heads calibrate but then it comes ready and reading the system modules is now stable. What is throwing me off is that the DMCS modules header is NO_DMCS. Can this be why I can not access the data area?

yes
This is a self-deactivation state.
If you fix the modules you will get user data access.

Thanx Janos. I wrote the correct header into the DMCS modules, recalculated the CRC, reset drive and had data access. Got good image with only a couple of bad sectors.
