Hello folks. I plugged my 1TB Seagate external into a 20v cable rather then the 12v cable. Naturally...bad things followed.

I have removed the drive from the enclosure and put it in a new enclosure, however it does not power up.

This leads me to believe that the TVS diodes are damaged. My problem is......I can't figure out where they are.

Once I know that I can check and/or remove them and try to get my data off the drive.

Any help would be great.

There is one risk : you remove the diode and then when powering the disk up, the combo IC that maybe is partially damaged burns and maybe something else. Protection devices are not always fast enough... :S

If the removal only idea works, you are lucky. If not, then repair will be more difficult.
I would seek for professional help where repair is done in safety conditions.

So said, it's your choice.

removing TVS diodes are there for a reason to protect the hard drive from damaged.

if you remove them and there something that causing this problem
you are more likely going to destroy your hard drive

i would get a meter and check them to make sure if they are ok
if they are blown replace them
and when you power on the drive
if the unit blows it will only take out the diodes and not the whole drive

Indeed you were right. I removed D3 and the drive worked, surprisingly well to.

Only lost 2.5 Mb out of 1.0Tb of data.

I've now seen so many shorted diodes, I reckon I might just come out of retirement and take up data recovery. Seems like there is some easy pocket money to made. :mrgreen:

BTW, your opening post said Seagate, but, AFAICT, your drive is a Hitachi HDT721010SLA360. I know that Seagate were at one time using other brands to overcome supply problems, but I'm wondering if you made a mistake in this case.

You had 1TB of data on a disk capable of storing maximum of 931GB?
