OK, say I told you all my secrets, in 3 years time you will have good knowledge, what do you do if another newbie comes on here asking for help, this newbie is from same part of the world as me, you then tell them my secrets as they are not compitition, my secrets are now in DataChav's up the road.

My arse. Still stocking 20+ years old drives and spares - of course don't expect to pay them 10 neither 100 EUR. and I know many companies who have. And it is usually always possible to repair PCBs or make adaptations, of course if you know what to do. It is more probable that you cannot find (due to shortage or due to incompatibilities) PCBs / parts for NEWER drives (and there are a lot of myths too but this is another story).
This is where you see professionality and where is possible to make a good job and earn good money. And there's a NEVERENDING NEED for this kind of intervention on specific fields, where (no wonder !) they don't argue about the price : the quicker you fix it the more you can ask and the more they are willing to pay. PERIOD.

P.S. no longer than a month ago I had to get data from a completely dead 5" 1/4 20 MEGABYTES (yes MEGAbytes) HDD... had to deal with electronics and repair it.
And data was crucial. Did it. No questions about anything.

True, but like every guru says, it's not enough to have the knowledge. You need time of practice and experience. So that guy in DataChav's will need a couple of year before being able to do the same as you, so no worry. Also, the demand for data recovery in IDE/SATA market will just continue to decrease, so that's time to give or sell your knowledge :)

What makes you think this will decrease? I still recieve 10 year old hard disk drives regularly, and Im sure in 10 years time I will be saying it then also.

Well, for sure you will still receive some old hdd, but you must say that you won't receive more IDE/SATA than today in 10 years. I didn't say it will disappeared, the demand will slowly decrease and being replace slowly by SSD/Flash memory card. I might be wrong, but it's my opinion.

Data Chavs- never heard that - it makes me feel happy to called a newbie isntead of data chav- god.
I agree with HDDSpaz- because i relate to it as with my knowledge in IT- i was born an IT Guru- have no clue about HDDs though- so I am a newb here. At my place of work if somebody asks me how in the hell did you manage to do that!! I say- "i get paid do to it and you dont need to worry how its done- customer happy- we all get paid" - that comes from 25 years of experience on my side and another 40 years from my fathers side. So no doubt some people want to keep things secret- it inherited practically :)

@BlackPST- you are the GURU man! 20mb HDD - i dont want to know really- the oldest working HDD i have is a 600mb Seagate :) signed by Kevin Mitnick too.. hehe

Allot of information published in these forums is general knowledge taken found in electronics basics and basic principles of hard drives and communications. The rest is experience- trial and error (most of the time lots of man hours and money spent finding the right solution) and stress.

This is not a walk in - pay for infomation type business.
And there are more newbs by the day and competition is becomming very tough. I am contempalting to fold up this shabang of mine- but everytime i do a succesful recvoery after hours and hours of reseach - it addicts me more and suck me in deeper... im addicted to this now.. to late.

Maybe you should have joined an IT forum where you can offload this 25 years experience to anyone and everyone because everyone has a god given right to be spoonfed all the information others work hard for.

That is the general idea ppl get here....

I was just making a point - everything has two sides - and i am joined to many other forums and i post some findings on my blogs too. But what i meant to relay is that most gurus anywhere who repeat allot of work cant be asked explainign things over and over. Some people on this forum provide brialliant information - some wnat a small fee some not. Great.

I dont like spoonfeeding anybody.

One of these days I should post some of the "strange disks" recovered....

The SSD things is TOTAL bullshit. People can't afford new actual HDDs, figure yourself SSDs that are many times more expensive (and won't decrease), while the cost per GB of actual HDDs is actually still decreasing.

P.S. for the people who actually are doing DR and starving / having more troubles than good, it's simply your own fault. In good and bad, you get what you deserve acting the way you do.
Commerce and business is like sports : only results matters. Of course you can use doping too, until you get caught or until you breakdown yourself.
