Hi to everyone,
I need some help with a logic board blown up and with no sings of life. When I tryed a WD 40gb ide logic, the disk spins but clicks at startup and then hangs. No bios detection further a 40gb recognition on some motherboards.
But now I put it on a USB ide case and xp detects a "WDC ROM MODEL-SABRE-USB Device"
Is there a way to flash the diskware so it can be recognized as 160gb or the logic board instead? (dos - linux - guindows method would be appresiated)

I´ve read that swapping rom U12 will do the trick, but I a closer look to the Marvel chip is that they are diferent. Do I have a chance to recover the data if I switch roms?
Original Chip was: 88i6888-LFH1 (came with the wd1600jb) vs 88I6540-LFH1 (the 40gb replacement)

the disk start clicking and after 5 series of clicks it stop spinning.

These boards aren't compatible I am afraid.

Also if the original drive was clicking it is unlikely that a PCB swap with ROM change will make any difference. It isn't impossible, sometimes PCB issues can cause the drive to click but in my experience SA problems and head failure are more likely.

If you wish to attempt a PCB swap anyway you will need to match the start of the PCB code (the closer the better), the drive should also be from the same family.

thanks Granaryloaf, so I had to keep looking to a compatible board? the fact is that I assume the heads should be ok because they were working fine with no falls or something, only the apparently over courrent that blown up the smooth chip on the first board. I´ve allready switched the rom chip and nothing changed. Same odd clicking noise, the only difference is that now the disk doesn´t stop spinning.

You didn't say what the 40GB drive model was?

I'm not saying that drives of different capacities will not work for you, but they should at least be the same family and the PCB code should be as close as possible to the original. A generic WD PCB could be completely incompatible with the ROM you are transplanting, the most critical bit being the architecture of the processor, but also the type, generation and configuration of other key components on there.

If you were able to confirm what drive the replacement PCB is from you may get a clearer indication of its suitability for use in the recovery; or some pointers as to what to look for in a part.
